Biography
Domenico Modugno (born 09/01/28 in Polignano a Mare) dropped out of school at the age of 14 and headed for Rome. Working in many varied jobs he wanted to become an actor. After being discharged from military service he enrolled in a school for screen actors, and met Sophia Loren there. He appeared in several films, but then switched over to singing after appearing as a balladeer in Il Mantello Rosso. Being already very popular in America before the Eurovision Song Contest (he toured there as early as 1955) it's no wonder Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu shot to number one in America, an achievement that would never be repeated again by any entry of the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1960 Domenico was accused by an opera composer of plagiarising Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu from one of his songs, but the judge absolved him from the charges.
