Biography
Shortly after his participation in the 1968 contest Cliff Richard (born Harry Roger Webb 14/10/40 in Lucknow, India) decided to have two careers running simultaneously. One in the pop music and one in the gospel music. His first big hit after Congratulations was an English version of the 1968 Italian entry by Sergio Endrigo, Marianne. A mixed bag of popular and religious hits like Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha and Jesus followed, in the course teaming up again with Hank B. Marvin of The Shadows on the hits Throw Down A Line and Joy Of Living. Although Power To All Our Friends didn't get to no. 1 in the UK, it did manage to reach that position in several other European countries. Hits like the no. 1 We Don't Talk Anymore, Daddy's Home (Live), The Only Way Out and Please Don't Fall In Love followed, before his teaming up in 1986 with The Young Ones and Hank B. Marvin for Comic Relief returned him to the no. 1 spot in several countries again. Living Doll was already a number one in the UK for him and The Shadows way back in 1959. And it's a feat that is quite extraordinary in chart terms that an artist returns to the top spot with the same song. Recent years saw Cliff reaching chart positions less often than before. And quite often it was with his golden oldies like Summer Holiday (originally a hit in 1963 and again in 1993), Miss You Nights (originally a hit in 1976 and again in 1994) and Living Doll (originally a hit in 1959 and again in 1998). The most recent success he had was a lead role in the musical Heathcliff.
