Biography

Olivia Newton-John (born 26/09/48 in Cambridge, UK) spent most of her youth in Melbourne, Australia. Winning a talent contest aged 16 got her a ticket back to the UK. And it is here she met Cliff Richard (UK 1968 and 1973) who invited her to appear in his shows. Soon she had hits in the UK with songs like If Not For You. Her early albums were a mix of originals and covers of hits like Jolene and Where Are You Going To My Love. As the hits in the UK and the rest of Europe dried up Olivia's American career really took off. Following her 1974 Eurovision entry Long Live Love Olivia hit the US no. 1 spot twic. In 1974 with I Honestly Love You and in 1975 with Have You Never Been Mellow. Both with the help of the husband of a friend of hers, John Farrar (UK 1975 with The Shadows). Her European career was rekindled, when she appeared in the film version of the musical Grease, John Farrar being instrumental here again. You're The One That I Want, Summer Nights (both with John Travolta) and Hopelessly Devoted To You were no. 1 or 2 hits all over Europe and the USA. Subsequent revivals in 1990 (The Grease Megamix and Grease. The Dream Mix) and 1998 (You're The One That I Want, The Grease Remix EP and Summer Nights (Martian Remix)) did the trick once again. But she not only starred in the movie Grease. She reappeared on the movie screen in 1980 in another musical film, Xanadu, another project with John Farrar. A film that spawned yet two more no. 1 hits in Europe and the USA, Xanadu (with the Electric Light Orchestra) and Magic. But the best had yet to come in the following year, when the title song of her album Physical hit the USA no. 1 spot at the end of the year. It stayed in that position for a staggering 10 weeks! Since then she hit the charts several more times, but the really big hits dried up. After a period of serious illness due to cancer Olivia recorded a new album in 1998 that contained a new version of her US no. 1 hit I Honestly Love You, the first hit single in more than three years.
