Biography
Brotherhood of Man were for the Eurovision Song Contest Martin Lee (born 26/11/49 in Surrey), Lee Sheriden (born 11/04/49 in Bristol), Sandra Stevens (born 23/11/49 in Leeds) and Nicky Stevens (born 03/12/51 in Camarthen). The group evolved from a session group that started life in 1969 and hit big with United We Stand in 1970. In the early stages this session group consisted of Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway, Johnny Goodison, Sunny Leslie and Sue Glover. Later on Tony and Roger were replaced by Russell Stone.
Four members of the session group had a connection with the Eurovision Song Contest themselves. Both Roger Greenaway and Johnny Goodison wrote for A Song For Europe. Roger wrote High 'n' Dry in 1968 for Cliff Richard, Have Love - Will Travel in 1974 for Olivia Newton-John and in 1977 A Little Give, A Little Take for Carl Wayne. Johnny wrote Symphony For You in 1980 for Jacqui Scott. Sue & Sunny backed Lulu in the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest and Sue also fronted the group Unity in the 1981 Song For Europe for the song For Only A Day.
Although a lot of sources state the group was especially formed for the Eurovision Song Contest, in fact the Eurovision outfit sang the songs of the session group on stage as early as 1972, first as a trio without Sandra. After Sandra joined the group in late 1973 the quartet had their first hit in Holland in 1974 with Lady. The group scored other big hits with Kiss Me, Kiss Your Baby, Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In), Angelo and Figaro in the mid-70s. For a short period in 1982-1984 Barry Upton replaced Lee Sheriden in the group. Barry Upton wrote Rubic's When The Kissing Stops together with Martin Lee and Tony Hiller for 1983's Song For Europe. A remake of Save Your Kisses For Me appeared on the 1997 album Greenhouse. The band still tours the cabaret circuit.
Lee Sheriden and Martin Lee (three times Ivor Novello Award winners) both had solo careers before Brotherhood of Man (releasing Sweetest Tasting Candy Sugar and Cry Hoseah as a solo single respectively), while at the same time writing for Tony Hiller's publishing company. Besides Brotherhood of Man they also wrote for groups like Guys 'n' Dolls. In the early 90s Martin Lee started work on a project called "The Butterfly Children" and wrote a musical about them with Paul Curtis and David Kane from Kane & Co.
Tony Hiller started his career in show business when he teamed up with his brother Irving to form The Hiller Brothers. He gathered fame for the first time when charting with Where The Rainbow Ends by his Tony Hiller Orchestra for one week at 13 in the Dutch breaker charts in 1969. He continued recording with his orchestra until 1971. He became more famous as a composer and producer for amongst others Brotherhood of Man and Sonia. Tony Hiller wrote other songs for A Song For Europe in 1962, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986.
