Biography
Alla Pugachova is Russia's superstar; she has sold 150 million records worldwide, putting her in the same category as Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. A Swedish record company, Vedd Record Music, was founded just to promote her and her music in Scandinavia. In 1991 she was named National Artist of the USSR, the highest honour an artist could achieve in the Soviet Union. It was one of the last exectutive acts of President Gorbachov before leaving office. She has been recognised by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and by the International Federation of UNESCO for her contributions to the music industry, and has a ship named after her in Finland. The Chicago Tribune wrote: When America sent Billy Joel to Russia, the only fair exchange was to send Alla Pugachova to America. [Notes from the Official 1997 Programme by RTÉ]
