Biography
Before finishing the music school in Hilversum, Marlayne started to sing as backing singer for René Froger. After two years (and ten concerts in Ahoy in Rotterdam) she switched to the group of Ruth Jacott (Ruthless) and toured for two years with her. She worked as studio-singer on albums of Ruth Jacott, Anita Meijer, Demis Roussos, André van Duin and Conny van den Bos. There has been some criticism in the Netherlands about the lack of Dutch in their national final, and subsequently an english-language song representing the country in Jerusalem.
This song was in the new country style that is popular all over Europe just now, with echoes perhaps of 70s country-rock. It had been my tip for the winner before the show since the modern sound and easy listening combination would be likely to gain votes from young and old, north and south. However while it was sung well, the performance seemed to lack a winning sparkle, something which also affected Edsilia's performance the year before.
