Italy: San Remo Festival - Cutugno fourth, Meneguzzi sixth

The 58th edition of the SanRemo festival took place in Italy last week with the participation of the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest winner Toto Cutugno and of this year's Swiss entrant Paolo Meneguzzi. Little Tony, who is heading the San Marino jury to select the country's first ever Eurovision entry was also among the participants and a top ten finalist as well.

The San Remo festival, organised by RAI, the Italian broadcaster has been running since 1951 and has been used many times in the past as the means of selecting Italy's candidate in the Eurovision Song Contest. This year it took place between 25th February and 1st March and was won by Giò Di Tonno and Lola Ponce with Colpo di fulmine. Toto Cutugno, the 1990 Eurovision winner placed fourth with Un falco chiuso in gabbia and Paolo Meneguzzi, who will be flying the Swiss flag this year in Belgrade, placed sixth with Grande. Little Tony, president of the Sanmarinese jury which will select the country's debut entry in the contest this year, placed 9th with Non finisce qui.

The Mia Martini Critics Award, named after the popular Italian singer and two-time Eurovision Song Contest participant, was won by Tricarico with Vita tranquilla.

@ Fabiano: no one (gay or straight) wants to be represented by Anna Tatangelo and her cheap quadrangular concrete nails

A Lucio e Claudio

I hope Italy will come back to ESC very soon and will show the world it is able to organise something important and well done to welcome Europe as it is due! We have to be again a main focus in Europe, but in a positive way.

@ Claudio: ma come non ti piacerebbe essere l'amico della Tatangelo che lascia il cuscino sporco di trucco, che vorrebbe essere come lei e che è peggio di una culandra descritta dai più tristi film anni 70? :)

At url=http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=234560344]http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=234560344/url] there is the 3 minutes version of Jalisse's new song "Tra rose e cielo"...

I saw all five shows of this Sanremo Festival. The quality of songs was slightly inferior compared to last year, but still there was more than enough to enjoy listening to. My personal favourite was Sergio Cammariere. The winning song is quite nice and reminded me of "Ti lascerò" that won the contest back in 1989.

And of course there was the orchestra... ah, what a bliss!

For those of you who still do not understand why Sanremo deserves the attention of this website: remember that this festival used to be the de facto Italian preselection for Eurovision; but, more importantly, that it is the "mother" of all festivals, and more specifically of the ESC. It is sad that Eurovision did not stay faithful to its principles...

@ yeah right
i remember you that ESC was born as a copy of Sanremo, and furthermore were taking part former and upcoming participant of ESC. I think it's enough to talk about it
It's also EBU broadcasted...

@lucio
piuttosto che essere amico della tatangelo preferirei essere etero...pietoso il suo "gigi ti amo" della premiazione.

@w s
for the orchestra maybe it's too much, but at least allowing some instruments not counting in the 8 maximum on stage...that by the way it's usually bigger than the one of sanremo (since it's just a cinema during the rest of the year)

@ Yeah right

DUH!!! seems to me the article is about Paolo and Toto , both esc participants and not about San Remo. You trigger happy or what???

OK!

From now on I think Esctoday have to be fair and start to write about every other national musical festival/contests like this one.
Poland for example have something that is almost exactly the same; Opole festiwal and also Sopot festiwal, just as examples.

If Italy doesn't care about Eurovision, why should there be any focus on their festival then?? At least be fair and turn esctoday into a page that covers every festival like this in whole Europe. Why as a Eurovision page sucking up to a country that disses Eurovision the most?

For those who can understand Italian you can watch these two videos where Paolo Meneguzzi in Sanremo speaks about the Eurovision Song Contest:

I have to add that I'm glad tht the favorite Anna Tatangel did not win: her song was horrible, lousy and with ridicolous lyrics.

@ w s:

Who says it is not allowed to play real instruments on stage in ESC?

The winning song would be an ESC winner. "la rioluzione" url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fIQtiZ7CQM]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fIQtiZ7CQM/url] is a great song too (it's about the disastrous situation in Italy), I liked Mietta and L'aura too. The show has an old format: 5 nights, 4 hours show each, full of little silly things, it's too long too old fashioned. It shold be quick with 20 songs in 1,5 hours, few interval acts and results.
I hate that Tricarico won the critics award: he sang out of tune a boring song, but he had it because he's out of his mind, just like Loredana Bertè (whose song was not original). Too many menal cases, granpas and boring songs. In the giovani section frankhead url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YHsixyiqBI]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YHsixyiqBI/url] and la scelta url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUcJCd07LYYwere]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUcJCd07LYYwere/url] the best ones

At least San Remo uses live music. I'm not saying the orchestra should come back. But in Eurovision it is not allowed to play real instruments on stage, and that is plain ridiculous for a music festival.

The songs by Little Tony and Tricarico are correctly written "Non finisce qui" and "Vita tranquilla".

Great show with some beautiful songs and many old fashion or with a lot of poetry but not singing.
I really like Giò Di Tonno e Lola Ponce, Anna Tatangelo, Toto Cutugno, Paolo Meneguzzi, Frankie HI-NRG MC
But the bust for me were: Eugenio Bennato
A masterpiece: Sergio Cammariere with L'amore non si spiega
watch it on youtube: url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=JCRj_CK_Bkg]http://youtube.com/watch?v=JCRj_CK_Bkg/url]

If Italy was a member of ESC for sure they would have a great act!
Please come back!!!!!!!!!

Boring boring boring! I really do not like this Festival that turned into something extremely pompous and falsely "elegant" with a forced "bon ton" that embarrasses me, personnally!
Too many polemics, too many useless babbling and always the same "biiiiiiiiig shoooooow". No definitely I do not like it. I tried to watch it this year but it took more than 1h30 to see the first 5 songs because of adds, mini talk shos, sketches etc...

Heard Meneguzzi's song.. definitely common, heard Cutugno's song... always the same old soup... L'Aura was great!

I prefer ESC :)
