“Public in Belgrade will be our accomplice!”

Exclusive: The Miodio interview

Miodio, Sanmarinese representatives in the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade, spoke exclusively to esctoday.com’s “accomplice” in Italy, Yiorgos Kasapoglou. The band will perform 5th in the first semi-final on 20th May followed by one of their favourite entries this year, Belgium! They also exclusively reveal the involment of a sixth person on stage! Check out what they said to esctoday.com

Miodio stands for Mi odio (I hate myself) or Mio Dio (My God!)?

The correct meaning is Mi odio…it’s a provocative name, maybe a little bit self-destructive…but we believe that everyone in life has been hated for having or having not done something… the important thing is to react and we are doing it through our music.

Which have been the most important “steps” of the band since its “birth” to date?

The most important steps have been:
-Participation at the XII Biennale of young artists from Europe and Mediterranean in Naples
-Winners of the Viva Music Award and Most Original Song Award of the Bologna 2006 Festival delle Arti. Artistic direction by Andrea Mingardi
-Winners of the XVII Festival of San Marino with the song “It’s O.K.”
-Participation in the tv programme “Matinée”, in RAI 2
-Participation in “MpZero Tour 2007” of Renato Zero as supporting acts: Olympic Stadium, SanSiro Stadium, Euganeo Stadium, Franchi Stadium, Arena della Vittoria in Bari and Velodromo in Palermo for a total of more than 500.000 spectators

Last year you worked with Renato Zero (famous established Italian star); what advice you’ve been given by him?

Renato Zero is an incredible person! An artist with innumerous virtues who always manages to give space and visibility to emerging young artists. There have been so many tips that we’ve received…some of them are to be always ourselves and never forget all the effort made  and the people that were close to us.

Whose idea was to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest? Did you have any “accomplice” at this project?

When we got to know that San Marino’s RTV would participate at this international contest, we of the band, unanimously, instantly decided to send our song. For sure our "accomplice" has been our label Opera Prima that in the person of Andrea Felli assisted us in the mixage of the song. The work was really good .

How does it feel being San Marino’s first representatives in the Eurovision Song Contest?

It is always a question of pride to represent a country in an international competition. San Marino has an active reality in sport events but in musical ones does not yet have a real and proper identity. This multiplies our responsibilities and pushes us to face the Eurovision Song Contest with much more professionalism and tenacity.

Who are the authors of Complice ? Tell us about your song...

Complice was born by the huge musical talent of Francesco Sancisi (Sancho, keyboard & sampling) and of Nicola Della Valle (Vocals) who penned the song. Of course, as it is always the case, the rest of the band participated in an active and essential way in the arrangement of the song. It’s a piece with a deep meaning that we believe a lot in and offers  us always many emotions when  performing live. “It’s dedicated to my inspiring muse, whose presence and sweetness is accompanying each of my steps”, Nicola explains.

Do you intend to visit any country in order to promote your song? If yes have you already decided the stops of your promo tour?

For the moment we rely on the help of the internet that, with a simple “click”, allows us to reach the most remote and distant places. We’ve  already received many positive opinions from our European colleagues and this make us more enthusiastic. We are sure that in Belgrade there will be an incredible show as the songs are really nice and diverse.

San Marino takes part in the first semi-final; did you listen to the other participating entries and if yes which ones do you like more?

We’ve already heard many of the participating entries of our semi-final and we have to admit that there are some really nice and particular works. We are caught of the Belgian entry but also by the Finnish band which is, no doubt, thrilling. We repeat that there will be for sure a varied show of high level.

Who would be your ideal “accomplice” on stage of Belgrade?

At the moment we’re working on the choreography that will involve for sure a sixth person. We can’t say more, but this “accomplice's” presence will certainly be an added value to our performance.

Nicola stated right after your selection that he couldn’t believe all this is true. Do you believe it now?

Having arrived to this point it must be believed! We got this incredible opportunity and we’ll try to excite  the millions of spectators with our music and our show…and we’re sure that the hot public in Belgrade will be our “accomplice”.

Esctoday.com would like to thank Miodio for their interview and wish them good luck!

Simply awesome. I'll certainly vote for it. It deserves to go through to the final, no doubt about it. But I'm sure Azerbaijan will get the debut votes. That's sad, because I fear San Marino will have a similar experience to Monaco in recent years. And we all know what happened there.

San Marino has 100000000000000000 times better song than Azerbaijan, but in this stupid voting system Azerbaijan has more chance to qualify even if their song is AWFUL !!

VERY UNFAIR !!!

To all who said San Marino will receive points only from Malta and Switzerland....: do you know Malta and Switzerland are in the other semifinal so they can't vote for San Marino?!?!?

azerbaijan is going to be in the final for sure because all the turkish diaspora is going to vote it, since azerbaijan is not in the same semi with turkey. so this year germany, belgium, bosnia, netherlands is going to give from 8-12 points to azerbaijan ( germany and netherlands for sure 12 points )

Are people here deaf? If there's a poor debut this year, it's Azerbaijan and not San Marino. San Marino's song is a very decent effort. But Azerbaijan will get more points for all the obvious reasons.

San Marino's entry is sooooooooo boring... I doubt it will receive 12, 10 or 8 points from any country, except those which use jury or maybe Malta or Switzerland.

@ Kelan: I am NOT from Croatia or Serbia. And you are wrong about the Croatian song's fate in Belgrade. You might think it's tasteless, but the Serbs will LOVE it (the song). It is quite their cup of tea, and very similar to the song "Crazy summer dance" from two years ago, which was pipped at the post in the Europesma Contest because of the Montenegrin jury members' "coup".

Most/some Serbs might refrain from voting for this or that country for political reasons, but there are still enough people in Serbia of Croatian origin to make an impact and give Croatia one of Serbia's top marks (8, 10 or 12). The same goes for the songs from Hungary, Bulgaria and Albania. It's just like Turkey's 12 points for Armenia each year: Everybody knows it's not the Turks themselves voting for Armenia, it's the Armenians living in Turkey.

San Marino will receive 12 points from Malta. Where they'll get other points from is anyone's guess.

Serbia will vote for Croatia, and Croatia for Serbia. Just like every other year.

@ Jonny
Maybe Hunagry will get the votes again this year, then. But the Croatian entry this year is so tasteless that even the Serbians won't vote for it and because of the recent recognition.

The Serbian Foreign Minister said that any nation that supports Kosovo's independance, should not expect any partnership from Serbia. (What I think he was trying to say is don't expect us to be nice to you). And although the Yugoslavians nations usually vote for each other, this independance has broken them, at least for this year.

However from your name, I assume you are from Croatia/ Serbia, and therefore maybe your comment is right, and mine is wrong. But I wouldn't bet on it.

A VERY bad debut. Extremely boring song. If Andorra didn't qualify last year - with a good song in the same genre - how is this one gonna make it? Shame on you San Marino - you should have sent a classy song like Switzerland this year.

@ Kelan: Serbia will vote for Croatia anyway. And Croatia will surely qualify for the final. The only way out for Serbia is to accept that Kosovo is lost. Besides, the reason why Serbia gave 12 to Hungary last year is simple: the large Hungarian population in the Serb province of Vojvodina who voted in their tens of thousands and with their hands and feet at the same time.

Kelan KW [38835]

The following has nothing to do with San Marino, but I have just heard that three countries, neighbouring Serbia have decided to recognise Kosovo. They are Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria. So I can predict that Serbia will not be awarding any points to these nations.
Croatia has chosen a boring song anyway, and even if Serbia voted for them, it would not have helped them to qualify.
Bulgaria has many other neighbours who will vote for them, so they are relatively safe.
But Hungary, who exchanged 12 points with Serbia last year, can certainly kiss goodbye 12 points, and I think that the chance of qualifying is possibly reduced. - Unfortunate as I want Hungary to qualify!
Maybe the tension that is mounting in the East this year will mean that a Western nation will triumph. I hope that Portugal, Switzerland, and Sweden make the most of this opportunity, because in 2009, this entire saga will be ancient history!

I like this song, but ones they recorded before (on their Myspace) are better. I'm just having a hard time getting excited about it. I don't think they'll qualify to be honest :-(
