Slovakia: Considering Eurovision 2009 entry

After a ten year break from the Eurovision Song Contest, Slovakia could finally be back in the frame in time for the 2009 competition, according to STV international relations spokesperson Denisa Dzunkova.

Denisa states that STV is currently discussing the options for including a space in their 2009 budget for a Eurovision Song Contest participation, a decision which will have to be finalised in the coming weeks.

STV considered taking part in the 2008 edition around this time last year, but in the end were unable to secure a spot in the budget to cover participation fees. This year however, things seem more optimistic as STV won't have to pay for Olympic coverage in 2009.

Slovakia has participated four times in the Eurovision Song Contest to date, including one failure in the 1993 semi-final. They are one of the least successful countries in the contest to date, their best position a 19th place in 1996 with Marcel Polander. Their last entry, Modlitbá by Katarína Hasprová, received just 8 points in 1998.

Forget Lebanon! While Israel will be in the contest, Lebanon won't join it, all you know it. And IBA won't withdraw....

Liechtenstein can't join the contest as they don't have their own TV station. Hence, they can't join the EBU!

Czech and Slovakians are not eatern europe... Goood, if you would say that to a czech or slovakian they would not like it... they are in Central Europe... and they like it to. Slovakia welcome back if you will join 09 and I really hope it will be a good rating for your neigbours this year. Or else czech rep, may not return??

Well I think its just stupid to not return? Why not fight? Look at Sweden, 2007 18.th place 2005 20.th ... and there are alot of other countries that had it worse... So fight to win, thjats better. Have some Fun is a good song, and I bet that Slovakia will send a good song next year....

And yes, I think it is REALLY annoying when all countries give the close neighbours high points... Even Scandinavia does it. but when we dont have any gokod songs... We dont so "scandinavians" let eachother down all the time. We are voting for the good songs not only with love to the neighbours. But hey.... IM NOT SHORE if Czech rep will give 12 points to slovakia all the time... Thats just SERBIA; MONTENEGRO; CROATIA; F.Y.R.O MACEDONIA; POLAND; SLOVENIAs doing support support support, can anybody vote for the good songs anytime. Molitva was a great song, but there wore songs that was better, at least 2... Hmmm, and sometimes RUSSIA; BELARUS: UKRAIN: LATVIA; LITHUANIAs to ... but not that often... Ive watched old votings...

It would be nice for Slovakia to return to the contest and I don't see the reason why they didn't participate all those years. You are always welcomed!

hehe would be nice to see them back- 12 to the czechs? meh its not like it will help them, poor czechs looks like no1's gonna vote for them again this yr :( so perhaps their only real points wil be from slovakia if they return!

meh just coz theyre well known doesnt excuse the fact that terrible songs do well bcoz of theyre neighbours!!! although verka was interesting ;)

Ryan Hassall, it's the most harmless case, anyway. 12 the Czech Republic and 12 to Slovakia. That's all, it won't disturb that much. It's the place Monaco left empty when they stopped participating.

Yes, I see what you're saying, and the ex-USSR songs do send very good songs (some of the best), but still the ex-USSR voting is starting to become a bit out of hand now :)

- Ryan Hassall

Well said!!! :D

@ Johnny K - Ex-USSR Countries vote for eachother because the singers they tend to send are well known in those areas! For example Verka was known in Russia, Belarus, Moldova and in the Caucasus states as is Dima Bilan!

I hope Slovakia join and will send some nice ethnic sounds to Eurovision!

In my opinion Europe can be divided into East and West in which case Czech Republic and Slovakia are east but when Europe is divided even more (Central, Northern, Mediterranean ect) then Czech Republic and Slovakia are Central European along with Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Liechtenstein and Germany!

Yes, I know that that neighbourly voting is not exclusive to eastern europe, but the majority of it happens in eastern europe, and the more countries that enter eurovision, the worse it will get.
And yes, neighbourly voting does annoy me, wherever it comes from, east or west.

I probably sound like a moody old fart, but i'm not. I don't mind some neighbourly voting. If you look on my profile page it says -

"I don't think that political voting is as bad as many people make it seem actually, however there is still a problem. There are certain voting blocks which I don't mind, like the Balkans. I can understand why the Balkans vote for each other because Balkan countries tend to send traditional songs, and that sort of music is very popular in the Balkans, so I can see why they vote for each other. However I don't see why the ex-USSR countries should vote for each other so much as they don't seem to send very "traditional" songs, so theres no reason why they should like each others songs more than they like anybody else. And as for Greece and Cyprus . . . . . .well I don't mind, they only have each other for votes so good on them!!"

Sorry for a really long post!!! :D

Jonny K:

Czech Republic and Slovakia is not Eastern Europe. I'd say Central Europe instead. Bohemia was a kingdom mostly influenced by Germany and Austria.

And neighbours exchanging points it's nothing exclusive of East Europe. Just remember Spain-Andorra and France-Monaco. Doesn't it annoy you in the same way?

Well the Czech republic will be getting 12 points every year then.

I would love Slovakia to come back but i'm afraid that I get annoyed every time another eastern country comes in and gives 12 points to their neighbours. I love it when new countries join but when they go and give points to all their neighours, it gets me really annoyed. It just adds to the power of the eastern bloc. :( Bring back Luxembourg, Austria, Italy and Lebanon!!! :)

(I bet loads of people are gonna hate me for this post!! lol) :L
