Rehearsals

Day 4: Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Denmark

The fourth day of rehearsals are now underway and this morning, Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Denmark will complete their first technical rehearsals and press conferences. You can read the reviews below from the rehearsals and later today, our media partner, 12points.tv will provide video footage

Song 10: Latvia - Pirates of the Sea - Wolves of the Sea

Pirates of the Sea take to the stage for the first of this morning's rehearsals. The routine is slightly changed from the one shown at the Latvian national final. It now includes a sword flight between backing singers and a picture in picture moment when a pirate looks into a telescope.  Plenty of hand waving and energetic dancing from the pirates. We see greater emphases given to lead pirate Roberto Meloni, whose strong vocals carry the sound off the ground effectively.  Pirate flags are waved by the backing performers at the end of the song. This is great entertainment and probably the most fun we have seen so far on the Eurovision Song Contest stage this year, the song is definitely in contention for the top spot.

Song 11. Croatia - Kraljevi Ulice & 75 Cents - Romanca

Croatian rap is brought to Eurovision by 75 year old Ladislav Demeterffy.  Armed with walking stick he gives a spirited and cheeky performance of Romanca.  He seems to take a slight fancy to the young female dancer on stage. Strong vocals and warm tuneful melodies are produced by Kraljevi Ulice.  Flying doves displayed on the screens behind the singer throughout the song.  The song finishes with Ladislav spinning disks on an old gramophone.

Song 12: Bulgaria - Deep zone & DJ Balthazar - DJ, Take Me Away

Flashing ultra violet light introduces the entry from Bulgaria. The presentation starts with amazing break dancing by the male backing dancer and then moves to show DJ Balthazar and DJ Dion holding guitar turn tables which allows the DJs to spin disks at the front of the stage. Singer Joanna looks stunning in a red gown which is open in the front to reveal shapely legs and a pair of garters. She holds exotic ostrich feathers to complement her outfit and delivers perfect vocals for DJ, Take Me Away.  Towards the end of the song the DJ set disks alight on the turntables for great effect.  The performance also includes a laser harp which plays tunes as a laser is touched. This is certainly the most contemporary song in this years contest.

Song 13: Denmark - Simon - All Night Long

Simon Mathew delivers a strong vocal performance for this gimmick free rendition of All Night Long.  Dressed in a white shirt, gray trousers, flat cap and braces he is joined on stage by a four piece band. The song is delivered with enthusiasm and has a joyful feel. He makes use of the catwalk and it looks set for some good over-the-shoulder crowd shots.

The Croatian entry is a lovely song. Maybe not a winner, but it has that 'old days' feeling. It can't be compared with the Latvian pirates. I thought they were drunk when they started talking!

I have been reading these comments to and back and would like to explain an issue about latvian song, being latvian, former editor of this portal, former head of OGAE Latvia.
Latvians during these few years country has been taking part in ESCT have tried several formats (sending professional singers and bands as Brainstorm (2000), Fomins & Kleins (2004), Cosmos (2006), shows as Marie N had (2002), special projects as F.L.Y. (2003) and Bonaparti.lv (2007) and experience shows that it's no matter what do you send - it's a matter of the mood many people around the Europe are having those evenings when shows are going on. And that's it. You can send a great vocals, but it's never a guarantee that it will win. You can send complete nonsense (and here I am thinking about such entries ar brothers Olsen, Lordi etc.) and it can win. At the same time you can send great vocals and they are not winning.

@ Daniel Sayers
Sorry but Georgia has sent such a disappointing song this year especially considering that they sent Sopho and the beautiful Visionary Dream last year

dk was simple and effective for a very irritating song.. croatia was cute and warm for an irrelevent entry.. latvia is a huge horror and the live can't save it in my opinion ; i see it in the final but like last year ending pretty low.. on the other hand, Bulgaria which i hated before is now looking very modern and alive, her voice even improved. Won't ever get into my top 10 but i can see this again in esc top 10..

Latvia - I think it's very sad that countrys who keep sending shitty songs to this wonderful contest, try to win by sending "funny" songs. Latvia should be banned from ESC.
Pirates? It really sisnt funny at all, its embarrasing.

Croatia - I don't get it. Very dull.

Bulgaria - I think Bulgaria could surprise actually.
The song stands out and with a good performance it will go to the final with no problems.
I think this is the kind of eurotrash-song people at home will enjoy, believe it or not.

Denmark - Will not pass. Will get many votes from Scandinavia (cause they always vote for eachother) but that won't be enough.
There is nothing wrong with the song but its too average.
And what's with the colours at the end? Looks extremly trash.
And his outfit is very lame. Especially the hat.

That being said why on earth have they added the male backing singer? It doesn't work, they either need to turn his mic off altogether or turn it down! Let Diana's talent shine through to it's true capacity until the female backing singers are needed at the end!

@ Florian G. & also, everybody here at esctoday.com

Just watched the Georgia rehersal. The best song in the contest. (With Malta, Andorra & Czech Republic not far behind)!

The vocals from Diana are truly immense. A huge improvement from the national final which even I will admit weren't amazing. This MUST at the very least qualify!

I had the luck to meet Moreno here in London, gave her a big hug and a kiss. She is so lovely and beautiful but why did she agree to sing such a bad song ??? Sorry Malta, with all my heart I want you, Portugal or Cyprus to win. But I don't think this song will do it for you huys. Next time...
