Germany: Chart show reveals biggest Eurovision hits ever
Ranking
The ranking is based on chart positions and only songs that reached the top ten of the single charts are included. For every week on #1, a song gets 10 points, at #2 nine points and so on. The hottest favourites for the top spot may be Zwei kleine Italiener from 1962 and No no never from 2006 as the most sold German entries and Puppet on a string and Waterloo from 1967 and 1974 as the only songs from outside Germany that reached the top of the single charts. From the national final entries, Wir wollen niemals auseinandergehen by Heidi Brühl in 1960 is obviously a favourite: it reached number one and stayed in the top ten for no less than 27 weeks.
CD
The double CD includes no less than 42 song contest entries and 37 of them were actually in the single charts. The only ones that did not make it to the top 100 were Chiara's The one that I love from 1998, Céline Dion's Ne partez pas sans moi in 1988, Charlotte Nilsson's Take me to your heaven in 1999, Karel Gott's Tausend Fenster in 1968, Isabelle Aubret's Un premier amour in 1962 and Frida Boccara's Un jour, un enfant from 1969.

My all-time German favourite is Dschinghis Khan. I also loved Roger Cicero. I'm pleased to see The Allisons are on there. They topped the charts in Sweden and "Are you sure" is still being played on the radio.
Tom K:
I'm not surprised. The UK has sent some of the best songs imo (save a few of the 00 entries).
"my number one" was not in a high position in the charts, but i remember they played it a lot in german radio stations. perhaps in airplay charts she did better. at least it's the only winner song i remember which has been played a lot in radio stations.
Thanks Tom K. Have ordered it, just for Ein bisschen Fieden in English!
Of course, this one is incomplete - it's a "compilation" cd...
I think it's a nice effort to bring Eurovision back in the minds of the people one week before the final...
And it's nice that RTL does so, even when the final will be broadcasted by ARD...
And this is a German compilation cd, so of course, there are many songs of Germany - why not?
It is easy to understand that Eastern Europe is not highly presented on this cd because when one reads the list of the tracks, one can see that it consists mostly of "Grand Prix classics" and at these times, Eastern Europe wasn't that much represented in Eurovision. On the other side, in recent years it was in general the German song which was in the German charts and sometimes also the overall winner. This is no affront against the Eastern countries.
For Helena Paparizou: She was in the charts, but not in a very high position. Today, I'm sure she is quite forgotten in Germany.
On the other hand, Charlotte Nilsson is probably much more present as winner of 1999. I don't know why, but the majority of my friends remember her, but not Paparizou.
The only thing I'm really wondering about is that Dana International's "Diva" is not among the songs. Everybody remembers her - everybody of the people I know - and here it was played at many gay parades or in the clubs...
Where is Secret Garden or Jean Vallée or Urban Trad ??????
Bad cd for me.
Ther UK compilation is called Ultimate Eurovision Party. It inlcudes most of the UK entries from the late 60s onwards and a smattering of winners and memorable non-UK entries (we always seem more interested in the UK entry than anyone else over here!) Anyway you can get it at http://www.amazon.co(...)210835871&sr=8-1 - enjoy :-)
@ Hector, what is this UK compilation you are referring to?? I 'd like to get it, could you please give me the details?? Thanks :-)))
@Fan since 1976
The article sas: "only songs that reached the top ten of the single charts are included"
so My No 1 is well off the mark;-)
1 out of 42 songs is from Eastern Europe.
200% better than that new UK-compilation effort. Although I have all these, I'm definitely getting this album.
@Stephen
"My number one" was in the German charts (peak position #37) but wasn't that much popular afterwards and very soon forgotten. A lot of people just bought it because it was the Eurovision winner. But (in contrary to Ruslana for example) noone is interested in it anymore.
@ProjectZero00
It was in 4th position just because it was the recent winner. If you let the public choose again in ten years, hardly anyone will still know how it sounded like. The actual winner is always overvalued in such kind of votings.
But it doesn't make sense to tell you: people from the southeastern countries always think that their entries are the best and greatest and most irresistible.... even before they were chosen at all.
john
theres no need beeing sarcastic about a song that was named the 4th best eurovision song of the first 50 years
My Number One? I'd already forgotten that song...
Germany this year will come LAST. And Spain second last.
Candyman
I don't think My Number one hit the German charts..
NO ANGELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol they forgot "My Number One"
Thank you so much for letting us know about this programme, I never watch RTL so would never have heard about it without this article... but I will be glued to it on Friday.
Too bad we have such an insipid entry this year....
I don't like such compilations, they seem so incomplete...
And Max and Roger Cicero, both 2 of my favourite German eurovision songs!!!!!
Wooo, Gina G is on there!!!! One of my favourites!!!
Good luck to Germany this year from the UK!!!
Germany, Spain, France and the UK could all get good results this year, but we probably won't!!!!!!
No Angels to win!
