Greece: Nana Mouskouri’s farewell concert

Last Wednesday, July 23rd, Nana Mouskouri gave her farewell concert in her homeland, Greece, more precisely at the Odeon Herodes Atticus, close to the Acropolis in Athens.

French website orange.fr reports about this very special moment in the career of an artist: “A lot of politicians, including Greek Prime minister Kostas Karamanlis, were there. Nana thanked her fellow citizens and performed a selection of classical, jazz, traditional and pop pieces as well as her own biggest hits".

Earlier the same day, she was awarded  a golden medal from Athens’ mayor, in presence of the Berlin and Luxembourg mayors.

Since she declared she wants to give an end to her carer, Nana Mouskouri got involved in a three-years international tour to say bye-bye to all of her fans.

Nana Mouskouri represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963, with the song A force de prier and placed 8th.

Sorry,Vincent,the only I did ,was to write in which position finished Greece in 1976,because you wrote that it was 17th or 18th, so I can't understand why you answered to me!!!

@Alexandros Roussos,
i do not really get your point there..i do not regard a 13th place out of 18 and 20 pts enough for such a good voice and a nice melody as "Panagia mu-Panagia mu"(Greece, ESC 1976). For me this was a big proof that this contest was and still is all about the show and not the song. If you had read my comments carefully, you should have known by now that i respect Nana Mouskouri very much and i think she has a golden and beautiful voice, although i was never a fan of her style of music. But i still think, in a show music contest lie the ESC, Nana Mousouri wuld probably finish also 13th, just because she is very good and her standards are above the ones of this contest

Dear Vincent,PANAGHIA MOU-OANAGHIA MOU finished 13 out af 18 with 20 points! W S,Francoise Hardy is french,but represented Monaco in 1963,and finally Mina,I adore A FORCE DE PRIER,but if you read Nana's biorgraphy (the title of the book is T'ONOMA MOU EINAI NANA - My name is Nana),she writes that she was sure that this song could not win,because it was nat exactly the music style that she prefered to sing!So do not compare what happened 45 years ago with catchy songs as Calomira's and Sakis'!!! BTW,Nana,is a very good friend os Sakis,and supports him very much!And somethind for the and...ARTISTS LIKE NANA MOUSKOURI NEVER FAREWELL!!!

Nana Mouskouri was a great singer :) but my favourite entry in 1963 is "L'amour s'en va" with Françoise Hardy singing for Monaco.

Milan S:
Nice to hear that you liked Monica Zetterlund, though her song is not one of my personal Swedish favourites.
(Three years ago Monica was killed when her flat accidentally caught fire. A tragedy.)

I do not blame ERT of course - they have found a formula that works, so they try it again and again, until its effect will be over. However, times in ESC has changed, and it is more likely nowdays that real ethno songs from greece will score higher, than those songs would have scored in the 70's and 80's - years were in order to score high and get the pints from the juries, you had to meet the conformist classic Eurovision formula. That is why i'm dssapointed but I truly cannot blame ERT. IBA for example used to know the right formula in the 70's and 80's, since then, they have completely lost it.

@Amir,
in the past Greece has tried to score well in the contest with some artists with a very good voices: ESC 1976, Mariza Koch-"Panagia mu-Panagia mu", a golden voice, a serious beautiful song, it finished 18th or 17th. ESC 1991, Sofia Vossu-"Anoiksi": great voice, very beautiful song, nice, "full" music, it finished 13th..ESC 2006, Anna Vissi-"Everything", also a very good voice, a passionate and strong performance, a very good modern-tradtitional piece of clothing, it finished 9th. So experience has shown to ERT that attempts to present something artistically really good fail or at least gets far away from winning. So can you bame them that they stick to the recipe of "up tempo song in engish with slight greek tune in the beat performed by good-looking young artists? I don't

@Vincent Barbarino
I'm not so sure if Greece would not score high if they had sent their real good singers like Xaris Alexiou or Dimitra Galani. Greece has a lot more to offer than the style of songs they stick to ever since "my number one". The same happens with Spain, how on earth a country with such a great music industry fail to send good songs year after year.

the thing is all these great greek singers, Dimitra Galani, Xaris Aleksiou, Nana Mousouri, who have a great voice they would never score well in the ESC..if the ESC was a true song contest, they all could win it very easily. But for this, Greece has Sakis, Helena Paparizou(who also has a very good voice), Martakis and co..:-)

@Dan Wilson

One of the best albums of Dimitra Galani I have is the one where she sings with Xaris Alexiou - What a power those two women have in their voices. It is pure heaven, that is what i feel when I hear this fantastic album.
I'm afraid dimitra Galani is under estimated outside of Greece, as she is by far, in my opinion, the best voice I know from Greece. I came to know her first in 1992 thanks to a precious greek friend of mine - galantis Loukakis so if he reads that - Efxaristo Galantis :-))

@AMIR

U R soooo right,pal!

I would urge you to listen to DEMETRA GALANI'S collaboration with KONSTANTINOS BETA,who is one of the best contemporary Greek artists with regard to ELECTRONIC/LOUNGE genre!!!

U WON'T REGRET IT ;) ;)

What a wonderful artist !
And I totally admire her decision to "stop" being in the music industry, it must have been a tough choice. Thumbs up Madam!

I must admit the kind of voice she has and the type of music she does have never appealed to me personally. But i wuld like to sy that this lady has a uniquely nice voice and has been a very well known and respected star around the globe. ne must also say that neither her first appearances in Greece nor her participation in the ESC brought her any success. The big success came some time later and was not neither in Greece nor due to the ESC.
Chara b>:
Laura Fabian is another huge star with a great voice..i will never forget her ESC 1988 entry "Croire"..for me this song should have won..
I think it has been a big honour of this contest that these two great singers, N. Mouskouri and Laura Fabian have once participated

I was at the concert and it was incredible! Among many politicians and artists all over the world, I was very moved when I saw that Lara Fabian came to Athens again this time only for the concert! She attended the concert with Mario Frangoulis with whom they are good friends! She said that she adored Nana Mouskouri since she was a little girl!

@ w s
I agree - we simply mustn't forget the incredible Norwegian cheating of 1963 - whoever doesn't know about this, can go to Youtube and find the video! My favourite of 1963 was Monica Zetterlund (Sweden) - a true classic in my (solitary) opinion.
