A biography by 1987 next-to-last entrant

Luxembourg: Plastic’s laughters and tears

Earlier this year, a book was published in France and Belgium on Plastic Bertrand’s career to date. The singer himself worked together with Belgian journalist Olivier Monssens and the result is a pleasant 250-pages biography, including 30 pictures, from the very childhood to nowadays.

Ça plane – délires et des larmes is the title of book. First of all, it refers to Plastic Bertrand’s first big hit Ça plane pour moi, released at the end of 1977, when punk music spread around Europe. Délires et des larmes is a pun phonetically opposing “délires” (frenzy) with "des larmes" (tears).

Some could have thought Plastic would not tell a lot on Eurovision. On the contrary, the man gives place to this experience along 16 pages, giving very precise details – such as the return of Italy and Greece in the competition as well as the name of the only act placing behind him: Seyyal Taner and group Locomotif. “I was really proud to get my four points from Portugal and above all by the UK. My closest friends felt so sorry for me but I personaly fulfilled one of my dreams”.

Plastic tells how his participation was made possible. He and his producer tried their luck with the only French-speaking country not selecting through a public selection. “It was the turn of Flemish to go for Belgium, and both France and Switzerland had planned a televised final. We managed to convince RTL by giving them the rights of the song, like it has always been in Luxembourg”. Ça plane – délires et des larmes, Edition du Rocher, costs 18 euros.

Vincent:
I don't like the Swedish 1966 entry very much (nonsense lyrics) and I agree with you that Lill was a very good presenter in 1985.

They gave the rights of the song to RTL? I'm sure RTL made a lot of money from it ...

Stockholm,
sure i know she has participate with Sweden in ESC 1966. I have even watched this entry on you tube. But franly i think she looked and acted much much better in 1985. I really think she was the coolest presenter of any ESC up to now

Vincent:
Since you liked the presenter in 1985 (Lill Lindfors), do you remember that she represented Sweden in 1966?

correction: sorry, i meant ESC 1983 not 1982!!

i lied some eurovision of the 80's, but not all. My absolute favourite was 1985(great presenter, great stage and atmosphere, great entries from almost every country), 1987(some very good entries, great winning song, great 3rd place-Italy, "mysterious", sexy presenter) and 1982(some very very good entries, Sweden, Israel, Luxembourg, Belgium, and a very original, interesting and pleseant stage

The Eurovision of the 80's were fantastic, I watch many of them again and again! I disagree with drusus - I really loved the 1989 contest. The presenters were a bit wooden in their performance though, but I felt the songs that year were great. I would have rather seen Sweden win that year with En Dag, or Birthe Kjaer...or anyone else rather than the Yugoslavian entry basically! Although...I do still listen to it :-P

Plastic Bertrand? An enjoyable song...but I don't think it made anyone sit up and take notice of it, and following on from Ca Plane Pour Moi...the juries would never vote for him anyway.

1987 was one of my favorites too.

...from the astonishing and uniquely ambiental song "The voice"(one of my favourites entries ever"vto the babbling bird and "Ireand douze points-Ireland douze points" sung by a fat dancing lady :-(

Mina,
i very much agree on this: Ireland's entries in the last 10 years are riding fast on a declining line..that is a pitty

Vincent,
I liked all of those as well but Johnny was one and only (I can't believe that from Johnny Ireland went to Dustin :( )

Mina,
"Hold me now" was a very good ballad song indeed. I prefer though listening to "what's another year", i find the words of this song more touching in every way. And i think we have listen to some wonderful ballads since "Hold me now", even in the last year of the contest: "Why"-Finland 2005, "every song is a cry for love"-Ireland 2007 and "Hold on, be strong"-Norway 2008 are for me also very nice and strong ballads..but they did not get that high :-(

The ESC '87 was one of my most favourites but I think it was because of Johnny..Hold me now must be my most favourite Eurovision song ever...ahhhhhhhh they don't make such songs anymore :(

I also think "Gente di mare" was the best entry in 1987. It charted in Sweden as well and it's the all-time favourite ESC song among Swedish artists.

I agree with you that the 1985 contest was great and Lill is still just as lovely and funny :)

Cristina,

Genti di mare, was the best song that year. By far. It was number 1 for ages in Belgium. I think because of their "we don't give a toss" attitude, the way they looked, the juries gave them the bronze medal. Shame because so much better compared with that German reggae thing and the boring hold me now. You know in 1987, I really like Spain. Do you guys remember "No esta solo".... Loved Patricia Kraus performance...

Vincent,

Once more I agree with you. 1985 is one of my all time favorites. The presenter, the stage and more important the songs... Norway, Sweden, Germany, Israel, Italy, France, Portugal, Spain.... I loved Portugal. I even like Cyprus that year... The points were still very exciting, and Lill was just the best presenter ever....

The 1987 italian entry, "Gente di Mare" by Tozzi and Raf, was one of the few italian entries to achieve HUGE success in Italy too! Our ESC songs usually didn't get much promotion apart from the event itself. I love this song.

drusus,
ESC 1987 is one of my favourites. And yes Italy's entry was very good, i think it finished 3rd, which is a very good place. There were many good entries in 1987, and i also liked the host of the contest also, Victor Laslo. she was beautiful and very different to all other presenters..I liked very very much -and i still do-ESC 1985. Almost every entry was good, the stage was very modern for the standards of its time, and the presenter was a pleasure to watch, funny and serious at the same time.

Brings back some memories....Italy 87 was real good, I thought it would be the winner but unlike some wannabe divas, Logan was Invincible indeed. Bertrand's song wasn't bad for the late 80s but the performance was surely not too appealing for old juries, he would have done better with televoting for sure.

PS : I don't think the 87 ESC was bad ! I still enjoy watching it, like almost all 80s ESC. To me, the Swiss contest from 89 was the worst 80s contest....no surprise actually, as the ESC reached one of its all time lows in public interest at that time with its songs being totally irrelavant outside the own little ESC universe of the old juries.

Christina,
yes you are right, "Ping Pong" was 1982, that means 5 years before the ESC 1987, but really it was a huge hit in Greece for some time. But i think it was the only hit this guy ever made in Greece..And i never knew that he had participated in the "San Remo" festival..that is interesting indeed..

Was a great song/preview video - but on the night itself it was a terrible performance.

@Vincent, this surprises me! :-) "Ping-pong" was first presented in our San Remo festival (there was a rule back then that also non-italian songs could compete), and it wasn't such a big hit here. Yes we did get to listen to it on the radio occasionally, but nothing more than that. Nice song, anyway. It was in 1982 if I'm not mistaken. Plastic had his biggest hit in Italy the year before, with "Hula-hoop". Then another big hit some years later, singing together with Nathalie "L'amour OK".

Yes, Candiman
In 1986, Italy and Greece were not there. So in 1987, they returned ! Don't forget we talk about a very very old contest... some 21 years ago.

return of Italy & Greece?

It is really sad that his song was one of the worst in a year known for it's bad songs. Pity because the organizers deserved better. It all looked very stylish and great. But in the end the songs matter the most.

his ESC was not that bad..Now i got memories from my very early childhood. Some time before the contest there was a huge smash hit from Plastic Betrand in Greece, "Ping-Pong" was the title of the song and you would get this song in every party, evry store, every public place...I still do not know, why he scored so bad back then..he wasa pretty known artist in those days..
