France : 1970 televised final to be aired again
In 1970, after 8 years of internal choice, France’s ORTF organized a televised final which lasted 7 weeks. Out of the 143 songs submitted, 16 were chosen by a professional jury. Four quarter-finals took place in the Saturday evening music show “Musicolor”. Songs were performed four by four. Juries in different regional headquarters of the French TV voted and qualified only one song for the next round.
So, on the 5th and 6th Saturday, two semi-finals, both having two songs involved, were organized and the final round was presented on February, 21st. Guy Bonnet and “Marie-Blanche” won the national contest, against Daniel Beretta & Isabelle Aubret (France’s 1962 Grand Prix winner and 1968’s French entrant), with “Olivier, Olivia”.
One can notice that France would have anyway been represented by a song whose title is a first name ! The Eurovision selection was only a small part of “Musicolor”. The show which will be aired next week has Belgian singer Salvatore Adamo as main guest, but also Dani (France 1974) singing two songs and Guy Mardel (France 65). So, if you have French eurofriends , this is definitely something for their archive!

Sorry, Euro Sheep !!!! and "My number one"
Jonny
Great version of "My number on". Thanks for posting it
Euro Shop
Thanks for the info
So altogether there were 16 shows. Too much imo.
Stockholm
Theres also a similar sounding cover of "my number one" - http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=pu1V1BSaayg
Euro Sheep
Aaaah the one I (tried to) watch must have been the second chance round then. There was Dr Spock, and song called "boys and perfume" (alright song actually) and a woman with a strange ghosty costume!
Stockholm calling/Jonny K
Going back to the Icelandic MF point - they had 12 quarter finals (11 + 1 second chance), 3 semis and of course the final!
The ironic thing was Dr Spock ended up beating Birgitta and Magni even though the reverse happened in their quarter final!
I
Birgitta & Magni - shame they didn't do better...
Jonny
LOL. That version of "Hero" is great
Actually I've seen the video before.
Stockholm
OMG you can speak alot of languages!
By the way, listen to this version of "hero" I found - http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=MF3_LtqNUFs
Jonny
lol.
I forgot, I did watch the German NF too, I understand German. I liked "Cinema Bizarre"
And Charlotte performed in the show. I would even understand if The Netherlands, France or San Marino had an NF. My Spanish is not very good.
Stockholm
Yes, also theres not much talking in MF, especially the way they sped through the jury votes in 2008
If France had a NF I might watch that because i'd probably be able to understand some of that, and I could understand a little of the Spanish one. And I tried watching the Spanish one but it lasted for about 3 hours and I only liked 1 song out of 10, so it was pretty pointless!
Jonny
I agree. The Danish and Norwegian NFs are OK because I understand what they're saying, and the Irish of course
I don't think there is so much talking in MF, is it?
Stockholm
Yes it probably was 16, i'm not totally sure how long it was
You watched alot of the selections this year! The trouble is I find it incredibly frustrating to watch a programme which I can't understand any of, I suppose its different with MF because I like it so much for the music, but with every other selection its too difficult!
Jonny
Were there only 11 semis
It seemed like 16. Apart from the Icelandic and Swedish NFs I watched the Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Romanian, Irish, partly the Bulgarian and the Greek ones.
Stockholm
Oh, shame the singing wasn't live and OMG I don't know how you managed to watch all the semis!
There was like 11 of them or something!
Although if you can understand a little I suppose it makes it more bearable. I didnt watch many of the selections this year actually. I watched the UK, Ireland, Sweden (final) & Estonia
I considered watching Greece until I found out it was like 3 hours long lol!
Jonny
LOL. I remember Dr Spock
I think I managed to watch all semis. There was a lot of talking. I understand some words of Icelandic - it's like Old Swedish - but not enough. (When I was in Iceland I got along quite well but I think they spoke some kind of "Scandinavian" then ). One more thing, I don't think they sang live.
Stockholm
Woaoa don't get me started on the Icelandic selection!! I watched one of the programmes, I think it was like a 'second chance' thingy, and the worst possible act qualified for the final, Dr Spock. So I decided not to watch anymore of the Icelandic selection!
The other thing I noticed about the Icelandic selection was that there was too much talking! After each song (in the round I watched) they'd talk for about 10 minutes after each song, and theres nothing more frustrating than listening to people talking in a language you don't know a single word of! So I just gave up!
Euro Sheep/Jonny
LOL. Watching the Icelandic NF this year was a challenge
(I have posted a link for you in the Lena PH article)
Euro Sheep
Bloody hell!!
Who'd have thought such a small country could hold such a kick ass selection!
Jonny K
You think that's impressive - in 2004, Andorra took 9 weeks to choose on out of 12!!!! Adding to that, it has to be one of the most confusing and convoluted national finals ever: http://www.geocities(...)s/Andorra2004SF.html
And I guess you could say this year Iceland took 5 month to choose from 33 songs!
and the same with Bulgaria (only with more songs)
Max Raspail
It's hard to say, top 10 I think. I doubt that it would have done better than 8th place.
@ Stockholm
And what do you think? What's your tip - what would she have reached if she had competed?
What a strange format for a selection . . . . . a selection that lasted 7 weeks but only consisted of 16 songs!
The Russians managed to cram 27 into one night this year lol!
Max Raspail:
I have the 1974 previews on DVD and it includes "La vie à vingt-cinq ans".

Ah. Oh. Strange. When I've searched it, I wasn't successful several times...
Thanks for the advice... It's not bad. It's sweet, in fact. But it wouldn't have cracked up my Top3...
Max, of course it is on Youtube
