Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins

Iceland: RÚV starts search for 2009 entry

Icelandic broadcaster has just started their quest for the 2009 Icelandic entry. RÚV have published the rules of their preselection, to be called Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins. One of the most remarkable changes is that the 2009 national selection will not be as dragging on as last year's Laugardagslögin, which lasted from September 2007 to January 2008.

It has been announced that the 2009 Icelandic national selection for Eurovision, Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins, will run through January and February 2009. A yet undetermined number of semifinal heats will be held, preceding the national final, to be held in February. This is one of the most important changes to the Icelandic preselection, which last year lasted for over three months, from September 2007 to January 2008, consisting of ten semifinals and a final.

Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV has set the song submission deadline on October 13th. More details can be found here (in Icelandic).

Last year's Icelandic preselection, Laugardagslögin, was won by the couple Euroband, thus getting the right to represent their country in Belgrade with the song This is my life. Regína and Friðrik achieved the best result for Iceland since 2003, ending up in 14th place in the final.

Í svörtum fötum with a song like "Dag sem dimma nótt" or "Paradis" would be great. Or Páll Óskar; his last entry is in my opinion one of the best Nordic entries ever, if not THE best.

I want Laugardagslögin back!
It was the only eurovision show that got me busy through the longest time! They were awesome!

Ben

There are already far too many useless dancers. Look at Armenia 2008. They didn't know what to get up to next and totally detracted from whatever her name was.

Molly, I was referring to dancers. Do you actually try to wind people up around here? I hear they're looking for someone to star in a West End production of Absolutely Fabulous!

Night Elf

Selma would rather hack off her right earlobe with a blunt scythe than enter ESC again. Sadly.

Night Elf

The way the kroner is falling at the moment we will be able to afford to go in 2010 too. They have an inflation rate approaching Zimbabwe, but they don't have the black people or the sand or the guava.

yeah, maybe Silvia Night !!! hahahahaha

But anyway Iceland is one of my favorite countries in competition, hope to see some good entry like Selma !!! She is AWESOME, and so robbed in 1999 (don't have to mention 2005).

I hope for great song !!!! Reykjavik 2010 ..why not !!!

Cyprus is gonna win next year

No it isn't. But I do fancy a week in Larnaca sitting on the beach with a cherryade.

Re: energy of backing vocalists? Have you ever met Hera Bjork and Gudrun Gunnarsdottir? They have voices that can grind glass at 100 paces and they have boys like you on toast for breakfast. Mess not with the power of the Icelandic backing vocalist.

Cyprus is gonna win

I didn't say cold as hell freeze your balls off cold, I said coolest. Frankly I couldn't give a toss how deep Antartica is. One thing's for sure, if they put a song in Eurovision, the penguins are going to vote for 'Let Me Fly'. Especially if they are Maltese penguins.

I'd love to see the Euroband come back, they were truly fantastic and 14th place just wasn't high enough for their two amazing performances. While they sounded absolutely marvellous live, I think maybe they did need some more energy on stage, but with a 6 person limit, what can you do, eh? I think vocals were the right choice to prioritise.

I hope for Bjork or Euroband!

Iceland is coolest place in that sense as you mentioned that is in terms of small country contribution to the ESC, but not in terms of weather view, because antarctica is cooler than Iceland, infact, it is an extremely cold continent at the south pole almost entirely below the Antarctic Circle; covered by an ice cap up to 13,000 feet deep, so you cannot say that Iceland is coolest place more than one sense

Laugardagslögin was great, but so were the Söngvakeppni Sjonvarpsins editions...

Ragnheidur Gröndal with a song like Skot i myrkri or Don't Wake Me Up would be great for Iceland...

Honorable mention to Malta, but their songs are not as good.

Well Iceland is the coolest place on the planet in more than one sense. 300,000 people come up with 23 Eurovision artists with great songs. No other small country ever managed that. Maybe Cyprus comes close, with a lot of help from Greece.

Please...no! The one thing I don't want to see in articles concerning Iceland's NF and entry is that artists like Björk and Sigur Rós should go to Moscow - it is not going to happen! they are way TOO GOOD for Eurovision!!! :P

:) I agree. The original version would probably not have qualified.

I love Iceland in esc! (yes, even 2006!)
But I think it's impossible for them to compete with Euroband! they were just amazing!! :D :D

I thought it might have been one of your favourites - but Eiríkur was just too rock for me! But then it's not surprising considering that I loved Silvía Night! :P

"The Wiggle Wiggle Song" was utter tosh - I don't know why anyone liked it :D

"(and it's not too difficult for me to pronounce the names :))
I wish I could claim the same thing lol! :D My pronunciation of foreign languages is well . . . . awkward to say the least lmao! :D French wasn't a problem, but Spanish . . . oh dear, I won't say anymore lmao! :D
And they definitely selected the best entry I agree, and i'm glad they gave "this is my life" a bit of a makeover during the NF, because whilst I like the original, I doubt it would have qualified.

Haffi Haff for Iceland. There's no other chance. Well, maybe Bjork! :)

Jonny, I'm also glad that the selection will be shortened (and it's not too difficult for me to pronounce the names :) ) Anyway, they selected the best song imo. "This is my life" was amazing.

Euro Sheep, "Valentine lost" is one of my favourite Icelandic entries :)
