Sweden: Kristian Luuk quits as Melodifestivalen host

After two years as both the host of the Swedish national final selection and commentator on the Eurovision Song Contest for the Swedish broadcaster SVT, Kristian Luuk, 42, will step down this year. He will instead be heading a major new live music programme by the same broadcaster. Mr. Luuk tells the Swedish press that he was made an offer to head a new live music TV show he could not refuse.

"We are glad to be able to give Kristian a show that he can call his own," says Ronnie Lans, project leader of Melodifestivalen to Aftonbladet. “He has done a remarkable job with Eurovision and Melodifestivalen, and we are now ready to search for his replacement”, says Mr. Lans. “We are not ready to discuss any names yet, however”, he concludes.

Kristian Luuk tells Expressen, that he would like to see a glamorous lady take over the Melodifestivalen duties from him. Kristian Luuk has been popular with the viewers and an Aftonbladet poll saw 61% of the readers voting in favour of keeping him as the Melodifestivalen host in 2009. Usually the hosts have changed every year, so Mr. Luuk staying on for two years was already unusual. Aftonbladet are currently running a poll for its readers who they wish to see as Mr. Luuk's replacement.

Aftonbladet poll

His style of commentating, full of innuendo and sometimes even rude language, has landed him occasionally in trouble with his bosses, but he has mostly kept the Melodifestivalen audience entertained during the tour consisting of six shows in different cities. Melodifestivalen is the most popular entertainment programme on Swedish television.

SVT are expected soon to announce the start of the ticket sales for the 2009 Melodifestivalen tour. Also expected is the announcement of the 28 songs that have been selected from the 3440 songs submitted to the broadcaster. 4 places will be offered to invited artists or songwriters as wildcards. SVT has announced earlier, that the rules for Melodifestivalen are from 2009 somewhat different from Eurovision rules. For example, pre-recorded backing vocals will be allowed and a total of 8 people on stage. This will make the eventual winner of Melodifestivalen to plan the performance again before Moscow, rather than send the same national performance as has been the case for Sweden for some years.

Hurrah! Never liked him much...far too sarcastic! He was crap at commentating last year too.

I'll miss him in MF - he wasn't as outstanding as some people think but he was OK+. I will most certainly not miss him as an ESC commentator, which he was useless at.

Btw Björn Kjellman has never hosted MF. He's been the radio commentator of ESC a couple of times, have participated in MF once and hosted the show "Melodifestivalen 40 år" in 1995. And. Of course. The fabulous film "Livet är en schlager".

So it's about time he hosted MF - can't think of a better choice.

its a huge misconception that elena only lived in sweden in a young age. she lived in sweden basically to 2003... antque had its base in sweden producing all their songs there and also became famous in scandinavia before greeks even knew about them.. so...

she is a swede/greek and could theirby represent sweden without feeling guilty.

Helena Paparizou to host Melodifestivalen! She has lived in Sweden when she was a child and she speaks very good Swedish, of course. And then, she is an artist and she has love for music.I would be so glad if she will be a new hostess of this great Swedish show! :D

Serbs can be sensitive these days. it's a hard time for Serbia (emotionally - it seems that economy is going well over here). Otherwise, u didn't really offended me...

Lena has been the best host by far during the 00's.

Charlotte wasn't a very good host.

I'm still thinking of who could be a good hos. Both stylish, engaged and funny and the same time without making fun of the show itself.

Hmm...

Some suggested Helena but I don't really see her an host.

I have to think about this one. I dunno really.

FINALLY! GOOD NEWS!

He SUCKED at being a host for Melodifestivalen and even more at being a commentator for ESC, which he so obvious had no interest in at all.

He can be a good host for certain shows but this was sooo not his forum and it showed. It was obviously he had no interest in the show he was hosting or the contest he commented.

During ESC he had alot of personal biased opinions and prejudice towards different countries. He also talked about everything else except the whole show.

Now I think his irony and attitude can be fun at the right time and place, but MF was not his forum. I don't think it's wrong with humor, but when it is obvious that the humor is just to make fun of the whole concept and not anything else than it's just boring.

Helena would be nice, but I would be absolutely thrilled if Shirley Clamp hosted the whole MF!
She is one of the MF-diva's who never hosted it!
Linda Bengtzing or Sanna Nielsen would be great too.

Kristian Luuk was a great presenter but I think two years in a row is enough. I was going to suggest Elena but Euro Sheep took the words out of my mouth :)
Charlotte already hosted in 2004 and 2003 semi 1, Lena PH co-hosted in 2000, 2003 semi 1 and 2006 and Carola in 2000 and 2003 semi 2. I think I would like to see someone new.

Annika A
Björn Kjellman would be super. He was also an ESC commentator in 1996 (this time alone).

I think Luuk has been a great MF-host but as a ESC-commentator he has NOT been as good. I have no idea who could replace him at this minute as a host. But I would love if they brought back Björn Kellman as a ESC-commentator. He was great back in -92. As was Jacob Dahlin in 1989, but he is no longer with us...

Ouch - that is harsh! :P I wasn't saying I want to see Lena or Charlotte back again, and I certainly don't want to see Carola! I was only trying to make conversation...

Jonny K. [46850]
Thu 9 Oct 2008 18:11:27

Euro Sheep
Yeah, although I can understand Elena's wish to not perform at ESC/MF again ;) I think it would be a bit weird for a former winner to come back singing a song for a completely different country! And plus I can never see Elena doing esc at all again, not even for Greece.
And although Charlotte wasn't alone in 04, I still think she'd be good :D Anyway, with or without Luuk, it'll still be an amazing show and i'll still try and watch the final at least, if not the semis aswell :D

Thought Luuk was quite good, but you shouldn't linger for 500 years like Terry Wogan did. Hope the person who follows in his shoes is as good and as witty.

Oh for god's sake, all these people obsessed with the Schlagerkärringar (look that word up). We need some fresh-faced artist who maybe hasn't got the same high expectations from the audience - Charlotte Perelli won, then made a dismal comeback and scored badly, Carola won, came back and did okay, the Ark were already famous, did badly. Each and evey year for the past few years we've known the winner of melodifestivalen even before the national finals have begun. Make 2009 a fresh-talent year and another format. I love Eurovision to death but I feel Sweden's finals drag on (not to mention watching Iceland's national finals). We need a new format and new forum.
