Cyprus: CyBC 2009 call for songs
The selection is open to any Cypriot regardless of the country of residence, or any European citizen (composer or lyricist) who has been living permanently in Cyprus for the past two years at least. The songs can be in any language but they cannot have been submitted to another broadcaster. Songs can be sent to: Eurovision Song Contest 2009, Cyprus National Final, Television Programmes Department, Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, P.O. BOX 24824, 1397 Nicosia, Cyprus, until 28th November 2008.
A seven-member jury will shortlist 20 of the songs received, out of which ten will proceed to the country's final. The seven members will be drawn from a suggested fourteen candidates and their identities will not be revealed.
The final winner will, this time, be selected entirely through televote, while the jury vote will only be used in case the televoting system collapses. The same as last year, it is made clear in the rules that the finalist songs should not be made public through TV, radio, internet or public performance before the night of the Cypriot final.
Another difference in this year's rules is the fact that CyBC do not rule out the possibility to organise a promo tour for the winning song as opposed to last year when it was made clear from the very beginning that there was no budget for it.
Detailed rules can be found here. (in Greek)

Good luck Cyprus!! I hope they will make it next year to the final! :-)
Evdokia was very good :-)
The best solution wud be DESPINA VANDI !!!!! i agree!!!!!
Despina is my best singer ever (although i aint like her last album as much as the balladz and pop songs she had sang in the past) . Anyway she must be the best greek singer !!! Sakis and Despina both in the esc!!!!!!wow (hypothetical) situation!!!
@drusus
Just gotta say : Anna Vissi is Cypriot and represented Greece 2ice . Anette is greek-american . Sarbel is Cypriot-libanese-british . Dimitris Korgialas is greek . Btw greex and cypriots are like 1 country , like 1 nation , so there is no problem or controversial issue due to the nationality of artists .
Tamta is 100% georgian , so it wud be great is she participated for the island , considering that this year georgia will be taking part in 2009 somehow....!
Ben Gray...
in your dreams maby.
i agree that Cyprus have it 3 very good songs the last years and deserve it final with all of them
I dont think that Martakis gona tryed for less this year .i dont think that he is stuped,he knows that Sakis Rouvas is there
Never mind Kostas, Despina Vandi for Cyprus!!
Why should Kostas Martakis particpate at the cypriot NF ? Isn't he Greek ? Weren't there rumours about Tamta for Cyprus or what ?
I wonder if Kostas Martakis will participate this. I think that a couple of somewhat-well-known artists will apply for participation, like last year with Marlain, but we never know what the people may vote for. Kostas Martakis sounds like a good idea- not because he's a good singer but because he isjust perfect for Eurovision; handsome, smiling and will put up a good show. I hope we will go better this year. Good Luck Cyprus
Kostas Martakis-Sakis on the same ESC stage!! this would be a big fun. I think Martakis is the only good chance for cyprus to pass the semis and score well..but somehow i do not think he wii dare to compete with Sakis and Greece on the same stage...but i like the idea..
Kostas Martakis could still win the 2008 Second Chance contest. The "voting DVD" will be recorded this weekend. I think the postcards were filmed in the old town of Stockholm
I think Kostas may be a good idea, BUT the one thing he lacks is charisma! Watching his performance of "always and forever", yes its good but the performance has no personality
i only liked there entrys from 2004 and 2007...
i watched there national final this year, it was horrible...
but Evdokia was very charming in Belgrade
if they send Kostas Martakis, we have some thing cute to look at but thats about it.
just send Peggy Zina, that would be fab
GOOD LUCK CYPRUS!
Sorry, I'm not a big fan of the Cypriot entries until now. I hope they will come up with something really good next time, Kostas Martakis perhaps. I liked "Always and forever".
Good luck
Nicolas Metaxas was very good in the last Cypriot NF. He's a great singer and both of his songs had much potential...
Cyprus is gonna win ESC next year
Cyprus your turn might be this year!!!!! good luck !!!
Maybe Kostas Martakis for Cyprus....?
Just dont like his style of music(just always and forever and ppl are talking ) .
Rumour has it tho , that he will be the one .
I wish that Cyprus tries rock because they have awesome bands. BRAVO KYPRO!
@ marc x: Poland was in semi 1 and Cyprus in Semi 2. Sweden was the jury choice there. And Poland was not only jury choice (as Sweden was), it was 10th in the semi too.
Good luck Cyprus, give us another good song. This year the jury should have picked you guys up instaed of that dull dull Polish song.
i would luve to see cyprus winning the esc once..but i have a feeling this is not going to happen very soon..one of the reasons i have this feeling is because cyprus with the exeption of greece and one 12 pt secure(not enough points to finish even last, countries which finished last in esc 2008 had 14 points) does not belong to any neighbouring, friendly or political bloc voting. Secondly i have the impression they care more to promote some singers from their home country, and since cyprus is a very small country, it is difficult for it to come up with some big stars(they all immigrate to greece, anyway..). If they are really interested in scoring very well, i think CYBC should put some more money and energy into choosing the participating act, into organising a big promo tour(which does bring some extra points) and also open up a lot to possible foreign singers, composers and artists. Or they may be they have fun in just participating, and maybe they will send again an ethnic-coloured greek-cypriot song. Anyway all the luck to Cyprus for 2009
They aren't likely to get an amazing song given to them in a month and a half surely? and considering their last few dismal attempts you would think they would be less worried about the nationality of the singer
I hope Cyprus come up with something really amazing! Hopefully a ballad Lisa Andreas style!
I feel sorry for Cyprus because (like many other countries) they have been stuck in the semi finals even though they have had good songs
"Why angels cry" is one of my favourites of 2006, and "comme ci comme ca" is a good song, although it may not be totally to my taste
This year I was a bit indifferent, when they selected "femme fatale" is really disliked it and was mortified they didn't pick Marlain! But it grew on me and it would have made a nice qualifier, although I wouldn't go so far as to say it was robbed. If Cyprus had sent "rejection" this year then I think they would have made the final at least
I think Cyprus would be great hosts too, if their Greek brothers can do something as awesome as Athens 06, the Cyprus can obviously host a greeeattt show!
I wonder whether Nicosia or Limasol would host it?
Anyway, good luck Cyprus! Come up with something amazing!
hmm...rather bad news: this probably means no Kostas Martakis for Cyprus 2009 :-(. Anyway, i think Cyprus has been robbed a place in the final 3 times in a row: 2006, Annette Artani: "Why do angels cry", a good ballad and a great voice, 2007 Evridiki "Comme ci Comme ca", a modern electro beat and 2008, Evdokia Kadi "Femme Fatale, an original song for the ESC standards with a traditional touch. For me all three deserved a place in the final and maybe a top5 finish. What is wrong with Cyprus in the ESC then?
I liked Kadi too.
Send a guitar ballad please Cyprus!
Well, good luck - I really liked Evdokia Kadi, the jury should have picked her over that fake silver horror ( puke ) ! It was at least an ambitious entry !
