Semi final acts & Europop
esctoday.com awards 2008: Your nominations (2)
Best act not to qualify from the semi finals
This category was introduced last year. Evridiki from Cyprus, who finished 13th in the semi final, accepted her award live in the 2008 Cypriot national final (you can read more here). This year, two semi finals were held for the first time. 18 of the 43 entries in the competition did not reach the final. Who would have deserved to reach the final the most?

Most traditional Europop song
This category was also introduced last year. After the voting, there was a tie beetween On top of the world from the Netherlands and I love you mi vida from Spain, the Dutch entry was eventually chosen Most traditional Europop song of the year in a second round of voting. Five songs canbe nominated out of the entries from Slovenia, Andorra, Greece, Iceland, Sweden, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Belarus, Latvia and Germany. Of course, there cannot be an exact definition of what is a Europop song but the ten songs from the countries above are probably the most typical songs of the genre out of the 43 presented in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.

best song not to qualify from the semi: Bulgaria.
Most europop / typical ESC song: Andorra. BUT!! I wonder. Why on earth give a prize that encourage clichees and banalities. Winning a prize for most typical ESC song is NOT a compliment. Rather the opposite. Anodrra is a very banal, superficial, old-fashioned song. Like some old MF-reject.
Let's have a prize for most innovative song instead!
@ChrisP: No, I don't think you bashing Sweden. All people has right to give critique to Sweden. But when a person attack same country in almost every damn topic THEN I'm talk about bashing. That's what Drusus1 doing and it's very unrespectful.
Princess Engla:
What you mesn? Should we not vote for the best dressed performer at all since it has nothing to do with ESC? Well trhe NOBODY should vote for that award. OF course it's the DRESS we are voting for...
That's not what I'm saying at all. But there is a specific award for best and worst dressed, and the way someone is dressed has nothing to do with how their song sounded or it's quality. I'm not stopping you from voting for Sweden. And I'm not "Sweden bashing" either, which if you read my profile, you will see Sweden is one of my favourite countries.
Renee
lol, for the record, I don't think it reminds anyone else of Vesa Matti Loiri. 1980 was a great year for style. It could be worse, Jonsi could look like Bamses Venner! (I do like Taenker Altid På Dig).
Princess Engla
Dont worry I know what you mean
It is annoying when people constantly bash a particular country for no apparent reason, not to mention childish and just downright stupid.
Stockholm
Although I do have a feeling the juries will like Belgium
@Jonny K: Don't worry. You don't need to like Sweden, MF, Charlotte or Hero. But the problem with Drusus1 is he bash Sweden in every damn topic. Why not let it be and just VOTE. Or if he don't like MF let it be alone and let the people who likes it enjoy it? But in every damn topic he must say how bad Sweden is and how much better other countries is. It's annoying, boering and UNRESPECTFUL. Hate or love MF but it deserves respect like all other National finals.
Jonny
I'm afraid you're right
Stockholm
lol, because realistically I know Belgium won't win, secretly (well not secret anymore) I want Georgia to win just for a laugh!
Jonny
Yeah, I would much prefer Velvet
Btw, your pic reminds me of Georgia's JESC entry
Stockholm
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greaaatttt!!!
I hope the tabloids are right, Velvet is better than Ola imo anyday
Jonny
Neither can I
According to one of our tabloids today Velvet will sing "The queen" instead of Ola
Stockholm
Well 3 cheers for Svante then!!
I think that must be one of the best things thats ever happened to Melodifestivalen, I can't imagine it as just a one night, 10 song show
@ChrisP;
Oh dear! Thanks A LOT for letting me know; I'll change the picture right away! ;-} I've got lots of better pictures of Jonsi!
And by the way; how can ANYTHING regarding that Finnish person be meant in a nice way?!?!?!
"MF is the best thing since sliced bread, its genius and whoever invented it should be knighted"
lol Jonny. The person who introduced the 4 semi final format was Svante Stockselius
Before I start talking I should state that imo MF is the best thing since sliced bread, its genius and whoever invented it should be knighted
:
"Well then nobody should vote for Ukraine since they copied Charlotte's dress!"
But seriously, as if the Ukrainian delegation copied Charlottes dress. It just so happened they both had silver sparkly dresses, they're not actually that similar. Anis was alot more revealing and generally more modern, saying that someone copied someone elses dress is a) Ludicrous and b) Sooooo not true!
And sorry but "Hero" doesn't have the best lyrics this year at all in my opinion. I think the song is great and I dont have a problem with the lyrics, in fact i've never really cared much for lyrics anyway. But the lyrics are so random, they don't fit together, tell a story, nothing!
'"Everything has a beginning, everything comes to an end
take it or leave it
be my lover be my friend"
Now if these are amazing lyrics then i'm from Mongolia, sorry but I just really dont see the value in the lyrics of "hero".
Don't get me wrong, i'm not sweden bashing!! Sweden is and always be one of my favourite countries, most of the music I listen to is Swedish, I even voted for them this year in the semis!
Btw, I read that Mans Zelmerlow was originally supposed to perform "hero", or was asked anyway
No one voted for Sweden? I can see people voting for Sweden in these awards and have you forgot Malta?? They give their twelwe points to... yeah right SWEDEN! Yes Hero is what ESC is about!
And of course you can give Sweden critque. But to bashing ONE country in almost every damn topic is unrespectful.
For me MF is cleary the best national final, then which right have Drusus1 to say what I and other people should vote for? He has no right to do that!
ChrisP: What you mesn? Should we not vote for the best dressed performer at all since it has nothing to do with ESC? Well trhe NOBODY should vote for that award. OF course it's the DRESS we are voting for...
Mods, please ban Drusus1!
Is that you, Sandra? Good to have you back! We've missed you.
This song is what ESC is about. When I vote for Charlotte I don't vote for how she looked in the dress. I voted for the DRESS which is one of the best outfits this year.
When did this become the Eurovision Dress Contest? Well, no-one else voted for Sweden this year either, Renee Lind and Drusus1 must have a lot of power in Europe! But good luck to Sweden, and you actually want them to win the "Best Traditional Europop" poll!? Although, I believe there is a best dressed award still to come. Maybe MF isn't the best national final? I have no idea...but I think MF became famous, and everyone knows about it...but largely thanks to the Internet, people are able to watch more national selection finals, which provides MF with more competition.
On another note...Renee Lind, that profile picture...reminds me of the 1980 Finnish representative! (I mean that in the nicest possible way).
Yes, I think Hero is cleary the best song from this years ESC. This song is what ESC is about. When I vote for Charlotte I don't vote for how she looked in the dress. I voted for the DRESS which is one of the best outfits this year. Well then nobody should vote for Ukraine since they copied Charlotte's dress!
And you and your husbband Drusus1 can't stop people from voting on Sweden. That's why it's unnecessery to bash Sweden in every damn topic. Let them who like MF enjoy it!
And you might not be the slightest little bit biased? You don't SERIOUSLY believe that Charlotte was the best dressed in ESC this year?!?!? And that "Hero" had the best LYRICS?!?!? And that it was the best COMPOSITION?!?!?!
As for the best national final there's absolutely no doubt, in my opinion, that MF is the best show.
Drusus1 has in a couple of days complained about people voting for MF as best national final, charlotte as the best dressed, Hero as the best song and now he said that Hero is oldfashioned. These are just few examples. He doesn't do this against a another country. Just Sweden. Jealousy or hate?
@Renee: In almost all threads there Sweden can be discussed he says negative things about MF and Sweden. It's should be okay if he said same negative and some positive comments. But no, it's only negative. If he don't like Sweden then maybe he could be quiet sometimes and let them who like MF enjoy it. But it's boring, annoying and unrespectful to put down same country in almost every damn topic/news. Yes, I think Mods should ban him because it's clear he's here to put down MF and Sweden.
Hero isn't oldfashioned, it is the real classic ESC song. This is what ESC should be about!
@Princess Engla;
What did Drusus say this time that can be considered Sweden-bashing in any way?
His arguments for calling "Hero" traditional are totally reasonable. And even though I voted for Andorra in this category, I totally agree with him on everything he says about "Hero". It IS old fashioned, predictable and it completely lacks originality. Just my humble opinion, of course.
undoubtably, sweden is the classic europop song
best act not to qualify was possibly san marino. really good performance and a classy song
most traditional euro song has to be "hero".
@ drusus1
sweden is , by the way , one of the most supportive esc countires, where already successful artistes have no fear about being participant in esc, unlike many countries where established stars ar so stuck -up and self important that they wouldnt never go within a hundred miles of esc participation. and i think we all know what "traditional" esc song means. thats why we all love the show somuch
Finn P
Well "Secret Combination" reached our top 40 in the mid-week charts, and that was just through downloads, it wasn't actually released here. I think had it been released by a much better known artist with good promotion it would have reached our top 10 easily
ChrisP
Malta is also europop, and possibly Belarus too
Moderators: Please ban Drusus1 from this site. In every comments he bashing Sweden and it starts to be very boring, annoying and very unrespectful. He should show Sweden some respect. Now it seems like he's in here only because he wants to bash Sweden. He's seems to be extremely jealous against Sweden and MF. ALL ESC COUNTRIES DESERVES RESPECT, EVEN SWEDEN!!!!!!
Bulgaria for sure is the best act not to qualify from the semis! I like their entries, they always find something special and different to send!
