Finland: 2010 selection rules announced

The Finnish national broadcaster YLE has revealed the rules for the selection of the national entry for the 55th Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo in May 2010. The first section of process starts already this week, when demos are accepted for a new open selection that will take place via the YLE website. The main emphasis will still be on invited artists. The Finnish national final will take place on 30th January 2010.

The Executive Producer Merete Manninen tells YLE.fi that the majority of the candidates will still be selected via invitation, where the artists and their songs are selected by YLE and record companies, even if this process also will be changed. We also want to open a new channel for newcomers and unsigned artists to enter via an internet selection.

The broadcaster is accepting demos until the end of August and an internal jury will then select a number of candidates for an internet vote. The public SMS vote will be open for two weeks from the beginning of October. Three most voted songs will win a place in the three televised heats that start on 8 January 2010. We want to bring the selection to where writers and consumers of music are already on the internet, says Ms Manninen. This selection method has been tried in for example Spain and Portugal and we will judge by the quantity and quality of this years entries whether more songs will be selected this way the following year, she tells YLE.fi.

The 12 invited artists will be revealed by YLE on 30th September.

There will be five songs in each of the three heats, transmitted from YLE studios in Tampere on three Fridays starting on the 8th January. Three songs will qualify via a public televote from each heat to the final, and a tenth song will be selected by YLE jury as a wildcard. The winner will be selected by the public in a two-stage televote. The final will take place on 30th January at the Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre, like this year.

A few points from the rules about the selection include:

-all entrants have to fill in the application form on YLE.fi/eurovision
-demos have to include vocals and have high production standard. The only format accepted is CD. Apart from the melody, the main arrangement guidelines have to be obvious from the demo.
-only 2 demos are accepted from each artist or songwriter
-the performers on the demo will also have to be available to perform in the heats and the final
-songs in the open selection are not allowed to be available on any other websites during the selection process
-none of the songs in the Finnish national final, including the songs in the open selection, can be made available to the public before 7th December, apart by YLE
-language of the songs is free
-at least one of the songwriters of each song has to be a Finnish citizen
-the main artists have to be Finnish citizens or permanent residents of Finland

In Finland we have now a tango festival. This festival is guite large event every summer.
Semifinals are in June and finals held in July. Jury selects winners. They will be " Tango king " and " Tango queen ".
http://www.tangomark(...)apankki/fina02_2.jpg

Jari Sillanpää is Tango king 1995. In Eurovision he has represented Finland once ( Istanbul 2004 ). He has many good songs. Tango queen Marita Taavitsainen and Jenna Bågeberg have been in Finnish gualification. Personally I liked both. Marita was 2006, hers song was ballad Enkeli itkee - Angel cries.

I think that the Finnish artist should sing in English, because Finnish language is so rare and strange. Finland is bilingual country.Finland`s official languages are Finnish and Swedish.

This year we had Tarja`s brother Tony Turunen. He sang together with Harriet Hägglund in Passionworks. Song was Surrender.

Cristal Snow - Scarred http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=JUacdgw-aoY
Personal artist. He was in Finnish Eurovision qualification 2008 when Teräsbetoni won. ( This is another song ). Personally I didn`t like Teräsbetoni at all, although Jarkko Ahola has good and powerful voice. Maybe Cristal Snow would have been too personal. This video is made in Lapland.

Jari Sillanpää is one of our Tango king. In Finland we have every July Tango festival ( since 1985 ) There are selected Tango queen and Tango king.
Jari Sillanpää has been in Finnish qualification three times. Once he has represented Finland ( 2004 ). I like Jari, good voice. But I didn`t like his song, except one Valkeaa unelmaa - White dream.

Some names I read and some thoughts on them.

Tanja Turunen: A really good singer and I particularly appreciate her progressive work. She convincingly emancipated from her Nightwish era and benefits from the decent song writing of Lindblom/Wollbeck (the "Vacuum" team) among others. "Die alive" is a good example for the consistent consonance of classical trained voice and sophisticated melodic rock arrangement. (Fits much better together than this year's Miss Ernman and her dance pop effort, in my opinion, but isn't unfortunately a really suitable Eurovision format. However, a straighter approach could have a good chance, since people tend to like what they are familiar with; and you know what many do expect from Finland.)

Katri Helena: I only know of her two ESC appearances, and both were veritably impressive. Particularly "Tule Luo" has a very special impact on me. A song that is somewhat authentic, traditional, nostalgic and has a clear and sincere musical message. Nothing artificial or pretentious tarnishes this sublime and classic pop tune. Kind of plain masterpiece, something timeless that will always have its place in Eurovision.

Johanna Kurkela: "Olet uneni kaunein" is a rather ethereal piece with a wonderful theme almost as bashful as its performer. If she manages to utilize her shyness, give it the most effective appeal and provide a song of similar quality she might do well. It could be a big challenge to design a stage concept that can find the key to convert intrinsic contemplation into a salient illustration of moods that actually elude spatiality.

My own idea would be some modern folk act, of which there are so many in Finland. Värttinä, Rajaton or Hereä, for instance, would fight a losing battle, but from then on Suomi would be my ultimate favourite Eurovision country, and no one could keep moaning that the contest can't reach the highest level of popular music. (And I'll go on nagging till my dream comes true.) Finally Helsinki 2007 semifinal provided one of the greatest musical moments in ESC history: Johanna Juhola, Tsuumi Sound System and Finnish Vocal Ensemble opened my mind to new horizons and acquainted me with the most substantial and vivid continental music scene I know about.

I think Finland should perhaps go back to rock again next year, or at least pop/rock. Its obviously what they do best and by listening to the albums of Hanna Pakarinen its pretty damn obvious they've got some great rock writers :)

But when I say rock I don't think they should go back to Stadium Rock like Lordi or Teresbetoni, I think they should try something more modern like "go go" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn86YvxgbY8 :D Also Vink from their national final had one of the best songs throughout the whole ESC season, and if they could send something like that I think they'd do well : http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=Pstq_LkdtMQ .

I think the (undesereved!) failure of Waldo's and the general failure of Finnish entries before 2006 show that pop just doesn't work for them, so they should either send some decent rock or something quite ethnic, but i'd favour rock and I think its a safer option :)

Oh and I do believe it is wrong to choose a song based on that same old recipe with the only aim to win: hot girl or cool guy who can't sing live with an up-tempo pop song sung in English with maybe a little etnic influences and one line in their original language...

Authentic songs are the best. They should at least show the contest that much respect and focus on the quality first.

@Tanskalainen Sinisorsa
People like you are so annoying. You are like genre-snobs, you don't like anything unless it's a hit. Well not all music is hit-list cr@p, music is more than that. It's also unfair to ask when's the last time she had a hit as she's only released ONE album, which actually did sell pretty well.

Tarja would be a fantastic choice!

Thu 18 Jun 2009 09:50:10

@David A
Something other than heavy rock? LOOOOOOOOL, lol and lol! They've had it like, 2 times in decades... That's not nearly enough if you ask me. And they certainly do NOT need a ballad. WE do not need more ballads... There's always many ballads in ESC, but never much rock, metal, country... or any other genre than pop basically... Doesn't that every bore you?

Every time someone tries a new genre, they usually fail. Like wonderful Belgium. They are great for trying different stuff!

Layla Al-Magnuna [58775]
Thu 18 Jun 2009 09:46:53

Only 15 songs in their pre-selections, but 12 invited performers??? I assume some of them will turn down the invitation otherwise it'll be so many invited and few who join in the normal way.

I really, really hope you choose more rock and metal in 2010 YLE!
That's what Finland do best and we need it!

I like their rules though, I just hope the language rule will one day be brought back to ESC!

Although prior to the final i was a huuuuuuge fan of lose control and a big supporter, i admit it deserved to be in the bottom 5, it had no impact at all.... :(
i would absolutley feel cream if Finland sent chisu or jenny vartiainen!!!! both are amazing, proli not esc style but would be awesome to see something like that in the esc circus!!!
chisu is absolutley haunting in Mun koti ei ole täällä :D

@ Tanskalainen Sinisorsa
OK thanks for explanation! ;)
I just lke to mention for each country some good singers I like, that's it, nothing else! ;) :D But I think that's like in all countries not only in Finland! :(

@Lily Bel: I don´t think that Johanna Kurkela would have any chance of being chosen to represent Finland. It´s not that she does not sing well, it´s that she´s not one of those "artists who will have priority". Instead, I´d love to see HIM or Anna Abreu making it to Oslo, if they were to participate in the "selection process". Oh, what´s the point of talking about people who have great voices if the dumb public prefers catchy songs even if performed by weak singers?? Alsou, Sakis, Verka, Hadise, Kalomira, Sirusho... none of them can sing to save their lives, yet look at their results. If Finland cares about results, then the focus should be about the song first.

In Finland, we have every year Emma Gala in spring.
Best artists, bands, records and song of previous year are rewarded. This spring was chosen :

Best male singer : Juha Tapio
Best band : Egotrippi
Best song : Chisu - Mun koti ei ole täällä ( My home is not here )
