Croatian Head of Delegation
Croatia: The Aleksandar Kostadinov interview

First of all, allow me to send you greetings on behalf of Croatian and other Eurovision fans all around the Europe. For 18 years you have been involved in Croatian preselections, and in 2002 you became Head of Delegation. In your opinion, has Croatia had any influence on the competition? Do you think Croatia still has much to offer Europe – perhaps even your well-known hospitality, once Eurovision arrives in Zagreb?
Croatia is a small country where all people love to sing; here even the non-professionals believe they can “conquer the world” with their performance. And that’s great, same as the fact we have taken part in the Contest every time since 1993. HRT (Croatian broadcaster) is ready to organise the event, we have great sport halls – all we are missing for now is a song that will become a hit in 42 different countries and get about 10 million votes via televoting.
Many fans still remember greatest Croatian successes in the Contest; they refer to it as “Croatian Golden Nineties”. These days you have presented visual changes for the upcoming Dora – the reactions were great – so many expect a good result in Oslo. What do you think is the reason Croatia did not do well in last couple of years? Is it politics, change in music tastes, or something else? Many fans claim Dora itself often has many excellent songs, but it is never the best one that wins. Do you agree with this statement?
In the Dora final there are 16 songs – 8 of them qualify directly (since they are composed by 8 most popular Croatian compositors). Then it’s televoting – jury: 50-50! And there is always someone who is unhappy with the choice; I can’t remember the situation when everybody was happy. In 1994, Tony Cetinski ended in 16th place. That doesn’t mean he is not a good singer or that a jury had to pick someone else. Also, many things in the competition have changed, now more than 40 countries participate.
Opatija, the beautiful town on the Croatian coastline, is a place were Dora is usually held. Lately there are rumours that Dora will be moved to some other city; the one being mentioned most often is Split…
It all depends on how interested people are for the project, and I can tell you – they are! Decision will be brought by board of directors. We enjoy doing our job wherever we are able to do it.
You have become the chairman of the EBU’s new formed section called Entertainment Bureau. Could you please tell our readers something more about the section and its goals?
EBU Entertainment Bureau is EBU’s executive department for entertainment. The organisation consists of 125 members from 75 countries. It is similar as OGAE groups – all countries have the group, and every group has its executive department. It is a demanding job, so a person needs to be effective, a good and wise diplomat.
Mr. Kostadinov, thank you very much for this conversation. Would you like to send a message to our readers?
You are on the right site! Have fun and enjoy!

Croatia has given the ESC some really nice songs and I like many of them - 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009. My favourite one is Vesna's entry from 2002, but the original version of it (in Croatian, of course).
My favorite Croatian entries are :
Sveta ljubav, neka mi ne svane, Marija Magdalena, Vukovi umiru sami, .... absolute favorite Maja Blagdan
the best croatian entry is Don't Ever Cry
good luck croatia.... you're the best
@Žaža
I totally agree with you, because of him croatia is synomim for pure crap on esc!
Long time ago i gave up hope for selecting a good entry and finally obtaining top 10, maybe even a victory: Whenever we even had a great song on Dora, it wouldn't won; like Nina in 2003, Andrea in 2004, Emilija in 2008... Those songs were guaranted for top 5, but we (jury), of course, screwed up everything!
As long as Konstadinov remains the boss, we can kiss our croatian asses and nothing more
my top 3 croatian entries:
3rd place
Claudia Beni - Više Nisam Tvoja
(i know it was cheesy but thats what i loved it)
2nd place
Vesna Pisarović - Everything I Want
(it was nice. not bad slavic pop or a slavic ballad, just a general song with good vocals)
1st place
Doris Dragović - Marija Magdelena
(amazing vocals, and a great song)
In 2001 Mr Corruption (aka Mr Kostandinov) became responsible for the ESC at the Croatian Televion (HRT). And look at our results since then!
2001 10th (BUT! Ms. Ksenija Urlicic was in charge for the Dora 2001, not Kostandinov, who became head of delagation in Copenhagen); 2002 11th; 2003 15th; 2004 12th; 2005 11th; 2006 12th; 2007 16th (in the semi finale!!!); 2008 21st; 2009 18th!
NOT A SINGLE TOP TEN PLACE UNDER ALEKSANDER KOSTADINOV!!!
Under K. Urlicic: 1995 6th, 1996 4th, 1998 5th, 1999 4th!
After Nina Badric was rubbed victory back in 2003 (when Claudia's arobic class won) no nameful musician in Croatia wants to participate any longer.
From Croatian entries I also like 90s more than 00s. My favourite was Danijela in 1998. I can't wait for Dora 2010 songs to be revealed so I could predict our destiny in Oslo!
What? The standard of their songs hasn't dropped! Croatia has been excellent almost every year which is why they are one of my favourite ESC countries. My favourite was Boris, Igor, Goran & Danijela and the worst were Claudia Beni & Vesna. Dora always has some good songs and this year was no exception. Igor was great and the song was beautiful.
Sadly it was so underrated...
I can't wait to hear who will be in Dora for 2010.
Let's hope that 2010 brings a good and quality song to Croatia, Europe and its public! Something what will really present and promote us, our music and our culture in Oslo!
i know Daniel
Estonia sent so many good songs, and then they go and win with that trash!
I agree, the standard of Croatian entries has dropped. At one time it seemed like Croatia would be the first of the eastern countries to win. Sadly it was an awful song from Estonia
i used to love Croatian entries - between 1997 and 2003 i used to love them, but ever since i've rarely liked their songs
