DR announces 10 Melodi Grand Prix finalists

The list of the 10 artists selected to take part in the Danish national selection for Eurovision, Melodi Grand Prix, has been announced moments ago. Seven have been selected out of the 562 submissions, and the other three have been invited by the broadcaster as wildcards. Some of them are already known and popular with the Danish audience. They will vie for the right of representing Denmark in Oslo on February 6th at the Aalborg Gigantium.

The 10 acts to compete at the Danish Melodi Grand Prix are:

  • Bryan Rice - Breathing (wildcard)
  • Joakim Tranberg - All about a girl
  • MariaMatilde Band - Panik!
  • Simone - How will I know
  • Jens Marni - Gloria
  • Chanée & N'evergreen - In a moment like this
  • Kaya Brüel - Only tonight (wildcard)
  • Thomas Barsøe - Just like rain
  • Sukkerchok - mper for kærlighed (wildcard)
  • Silas & Kat - Come come run away

Bryan Rice already participated last year as a songwriter, and is also known thanks to two successful albums. Kaya Brüel brings a song composed by herself; she is the daughter of jazz singer Birgit Brüel. The girl-trio Sukkerchok participated last year at the Danish Melodi Grand Prix, ending up equal 3rd thus kicking off their career very successfully.

Joakim Tranberg will participate with a song composed by last year's author of the Danish entry, Ireland's Ronan Keating. He also won the contest Elsk mig i nat, aired on Channel 5. Simone is also a known face on the Danish television: she won the competition Scenen er din, on TV2, and this year she competes with a song written by Jacob Launbjerg, the man behind the winning entries back in 2005 and 2008. Silas Host participated at the Dancing with the stars show; he enters MGP in duo with Kat Thisted, lead singer of the band The Kat.

Jens Marni, who hails from the Faroe Islands, enters the competition with a song composed by Noam Halby from the popular band Johnny Deluxe, former act at MGP. MariaMatilde Band will present one of the only two songs in Danish - the other one is Sukkerchok's  mper for kærlighed. Thomas Barsøe is known abroad, especially in Japan, where he has topped the charts, and in California, where he lives. Tomas N'evergreen lives in Moscow, where he is a pop star. He will perform at MGP in duet with Christina Chanée, known from DR1's Finally Friday.

All of them will be competing to represent Denmark in Oslo on February 6th, at the Gigantium, in Aalborg. Tickets for the show can be booked online here .

@Mic Simon+
Well, I don't know about ratings, it's just the feeling I get. Maybe because the songs have been so average, I don't know. I just haven't sensed it being as popular as for instance MF in Sweden, lol. :P I do hope it is popular there too of course, so that's just a good thing if you say so. ;)

Obviously it's just my taste since Morgan liked last years' songs and I only liked Sukkerchok. :P I look forward to hearing the songs this year as some names are interesting, the two sung in Danish of course and Jens Marni seemed very promising to me. :D

Good luck to Denmark :)

Two of the songs are written by Swedes; "In a moment like this" (Gson, Bernholm, Sethson) and "Just like rain" (Karlsson, Övrenius, Jonsson) :)

You are right. People in Denmark are interested in MGP and Eurovision, but DR is not. The only thing that interest DR, is to make a big show with "big" names (Ronan Keating etc). They don´t care at all who the winner will be. Therefore they invite the same composers every year and call it an open competition.

last year they had a great NF whatever Laila says,.. I just hope they can chose better than random average pop poorly performed (Hera, Brinck etc..)

isnt there an official link with pictures and all that yet?

Interesting names this year, realy looking forward to MGP - the only one that I don't like of those 10 is Simone, but hopefully she'll surprise in a positive way!

Laila ♥ YEUROVIZJON!,
It's a realy strange conslussion that you make, why shouldn't we be interested in Eurovision? Both MGP & ESC are the programs with most wievers...

I haven't liked Denmark's entries that much in the last year. They don't seem too interested in Eurovision anymore and just send average pop songs.

Well, the list looks OK to me and I think they are making MORE effort this year than last year which was pretty awful. I wanted Sukkerchok to win last year, lol. Great they got Ronan Keating to write a song again, but won't that be yet another average pop song? Same with Bryan Rice and Thomas Barsøe - more of the boring pop guys which they have been sending the last years.

I also see they got a song with Kat from the band "The Kat". I had heard of them actually without remembering their name... They make sleazy kind of rock with a lot of cursewords and had that slutty CD cover, lol. It's not my kind of rock, but at least that means it might be SOME variation in the songs at least.

And of course they have Kaya Brül, an OK singer, but she will be singing in English here...

Tomas N'evergreen was in the Russian NF last year. Another average pop singer.

I look forward to hear Jens Marni. He's got the kind of voice I like and is good live. If he only has a great song... :) I hope he will have something more up-tempo rockish, like when he warmed up for Bryan Adams: http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=2rQwMV1mH_c Now that is easy for me to like! :D He reminds me a little of Daughtry, lol.

Simone is also a good singer, but I don't like her voice. Maybe I just didn't like her voice because she was very young on the videos I heard her. She will be the youngest of them all I suppose.

MariaMatilde Band remind me of Sukkerchok and they also sing in Danish. Great, we will have two of that kind! lol. Luckily, I like them, but I think Sukkerchok were better live than MariaMatilde Band. They are perhaps a little more electropop than Sukkerchok though.

Joakim Tranberg has a nice tone in his voice that I like.

So the ones I look most forward to are Jens Marni, Sukkerchok, Silas & Kat and MariaMatilde Band. :)

Denmark is kinda one of those countries that picks their entries and I don't really follow the process at all. I'm sure there are about 8 really God awful songs up there, 1 that is mildly enjoyable (it will be the one that wins) and 1 that will be totally overlooked despite being mildly excellent (Lucky Boy last year... so darn catchy!)

Let's not wonder off topic!

I (nearly always) enjoy Danish entries, but I am very surprised to see Ronan Keating here again!

Last year, I like "Believe Again", "Fairytale", "Is it true?" and "Rändajad", but other side a few poor song's are take unfairly points. I hope this time we get a fair song contest.

@ Michael UK

I'll give France credit as they are a cut above the rest in the West and Bruno Berberes talks a good game when it comes to Eurovision.

We Brits still think Eurovision is a comedy musical hence why we send half-hearted ironic schlager like 'Don't Play That Song Again' and that monstrosity that is Scooch!

Where are the people who have the talent to give us something as rousing and memorable like 'Love Shine a Light'?

@ the black adder
well i ll give france credit for at least sendong big names to the contest recently, germany possiblt deserved better results in 06 and 09, and spain well , what can i say , they have a big long show to choose the entry and still score badly. i thought dnash and soraya had good songs and deserved better results

as for the uk , well they have tried so many different formats in the last 10 years but apart from 09 it all seemed so half hearted and tongue-in-cheek.
i still think a format similar to MF would work in the uk. there is definately an appetite for a saturday night show where the viewers get to vote. im sure it would work

Tue 12 Jan 2010 18:18:19

@ Michael UK

I know!

They put their heart and soul into it last year with Andrew Lloyd Webber and all that, 12 months later nothing!

Typical west Europeans at Eurovision, It's no wonder why the west struggles nowadays, If they can't be bothered why don't they pull out now!

It sounds good...last year DMGP was a great show and had great songs...but Denmark doesn't seem to drop the Ronan Keating-Simon Mathew-Jakob Sveistrup -formula....this kind os songs sound good and are a crowd-pleaser but enough is enough...

@ Sonia's Bolero Jacket

Do you drink? and if so can I have some!
There's no way a Big 4 nation will win it, even if it's a juries favourite, those blasted Televoters especially those Turkish Immigrants will treat France, UK, Spain and Germany with contempt.

As for Iceland, there banking troubles didn't stop Yohanna getting 2nd place!

i agree its so frustrating that the bbc keeps us waiting so long. i wonder if it tis lack of interest or are they negotiating with someone important . probably the former!

What a pity that DMG, MGP and 1st heat of MF is going to be on the same night. :(
I think I will choose MF again, because Sweden has the best selection every year. I wanted to see the Danish and the Norwegian final but I can't. =(
What a pity, because I do not really watch the national selections just MGP, DMGP and MF. But this year... =(

Sonia's Bolero Jacket [38176]

@ Axel - Iceland's refusal to pay back the money lost by its banks means it has hardly endeared itself to the rest of Europe of late. I know politics should be divorced from the contest, but let's not be naive. I've a gut feeling it's going to be one of the 'Big 4' this year...France's star being the one that is most especially in the ascension.

Martin Fjellanger [45578]
Tue 12 Jan 2010 15:27:20

When can we hear the songs?? :) Do we have to wait until the final?

I also read this somewhere about Ronan Keating:
"It has also been reported that Ronan Keating may also collaborate with British star Justin Lee Collins, as part of Collins' attempt to represent a country in the 2010 Contest in Norway."
