Norway sends Didrik Solli-Tangen to Eurovision

The Norwegian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 was held tonight. Eight acts competed in the final of MGP 2010 and eventually it was decided that Didrik Solli-Tangen will represent Norway on homeground with the song My heart is yours written by Hanne Sørvaag and Fredrik Kempe.

Complete results

The winning song was cosen in two rounds of voting. In the first round, televoting alone selected the top four:

  • Bjørn Johan Muri - Yes man
(Simone Larsen, Simen Eriksrud, Bjørn Johan Muri)
  • Didrik Solli-Tangen - My heart is yours
    (Hanne Sørvaag, Fredrik Kempe)
  • Keep of Kalessin - The dragontower
(Arnt Grønbech/Arnt Grønbech, Torbjørn Schei, Vegar Larsen, Robin Isaksen)
  • A1 - Don't wanna lose you again
(Ben Adams, Mark Read, Christian Ingebrigtsen)

The eventual winner was then decided by a mixture of televoting and jury voting. Firstly, four regional juries gave 2000, 4000, 6000 and 8000 votes to their respective top four. Afterwards, the absolute number of telvotes was added, split into five regions. Didrik Solli-Tangen was the winner. The complete results were as follows:

Songwriters Hanne Sørvaag and Fredrik Kempe have both competed in the Eurovision Song Contest before. Hanne Sørvaag co-wrote the German entry in 2008, Disappear. Performed by No Angels, it finished equal 23rd and hence last in the final. Fredrik Kempe co-wrote the Swedish entries in 2008 and 2009. Charlotte Perrelli finished 18th in 2008 with Hero while Malena Ernman came 21st last year with La voix.

The 2010 esctoday.com National Final Awards will be held between April and May, which means between the national final season and the Eurovision Song Contest. We will repeat the same format with two rounds for nominations which was used this year - you can read how it works here. However, this time the individual polls for each country will always be held right after the national final, when the entries are still fresh. You can vote for your favourite performance not to qualify in the Norwegian national final here and for your favourite song not to qualify here.

listened to it 5 times now. Catchy and anthemic, though the opening solo is rather cheesy, as are some of the succeeding phrases. It will get votes for it's forcefulness, and the guy clearly has a strong voice. Not sure if it's a winner but good luck Norway for putting in a song that could be in the mix depending on the strength of other entries. Top 5?????

I can't help feeling sorry for A1 ...NRK invited them to take part and A1 thought entering the Norwegian preselection would help their career...and now they are left feeling upset and empty having failed in their quest. Didrik has a great song and he can sing so well, so I am sure he will bring a good result for Norway. But poor A1 ...well I suppose they could apply to the BBC now and try to sing Pete Waterman's song instead since they are mostly British after all!!!!!

Its awesome, but I've heard it before.

It's a mixture of Brian Kennedy, Thorstein Sødal, Disney Soundtrack and several pop-anthems.

12 points for Norway. This was my favorite since the first time i heard it, and i still havent heard all the songs from the norwegian final :O)
The song is so great, and Didrik sings it beautiful. I get goosebums everytime i hear it. :O)
Good luck Norway.
Greetings from Denmark

Thanks Graham. I agree. This is such a difficult song to sing, with at least three key changes and what appears to be 2 or 3 octaves. Much better than Alexander Rybak, whose song I initially loved and can see why it won, quickly becme irritating. This song has the same impression on me as Yohanna last year who in my opinion should have walked it

We usually don't get many points from Finland anyways. Last year was an exception ;)

very good singer but the song sucks

That's your opinion, Alex, and you're welcome to it. Thankfully I don't share it with you, since it's my country's entry we are talking about here. I'm constantly trying to find ways to think positively about this song, and I suppose I shall be generous enough to unselfishly share my thoughts with y'all. :P

I don't think it's a bad song. Boring, perhaps. Certainly nothing exceptionally innovative. It's trying to be You raise me up and a few similar other songs in the same style. Someone mentioned a British NF ballad that also offered roughly the same package. Every year at least one ballad is in the Top 5. I guess we're aiming for that.

My concern is that the song may be a bit too serious. It's got a pretty melody with all the right ingredients, but it's not a feelgood song, it's not a song that can be played everywhere on the radio (NRK's own P3 won't play it), and it's certainly not a song you can sing along to. You have to sit down and concentrate when you listen to this song. A lot of people are not willing (or even able) to do that.

On the other hand, I'm not sure his voice is good enough to pull this off. In the studio with only a producer listening, sure. At a funeral with a hundred people listening, sure. But in Telenor Arena in front of an audience of 18.000 people and billions of viewers... Not so sure. He was nervous already in the semifinal. With a song like this, your target audience is people who like classical/musical/opera/vocal music. Those people often have a very sharp ear and are easily put off by even the smallest mistakes. They don't like amateurs. But that's what Didrik is. He's on his way to becoming a great singer, but at 22 his voice is not yet fully developed. Experts can hear that, and this song is pandering to the experts.

We might be shooting for the moon here.

I am not talking about the singer.... he is defenitely a very good singer but what do you do with a good singer if the song is so bad as this one.... this remind me of Malta last year... very good singer but the song sucks.....

It got twice as many votes as A1. Norway stands behind Didrik

That's actually a valid point. His victory was indeed something of a landslide. Some people (myself included) were worried that if both Bjørn Johan Muri and A1 went to the gold final, they would steal votes from each other and thus diminish each other's chances of winning. But if you add up the total votes of both the pop songs (153.174 + 264.882), the two of them combined (418.056) still didn't have enough votes to beat Didrik (440.675). I think nothing short of a natural disaster could have stopped Didrik on Saturday night. He was far, far ahead of the others. Like it or not.

Rich Landon - You are so spot on. I was in the audience for MGP and this song was just mind blowing. Absolutely incredible. How can anyone mock it. A much better singer than Rybak.

Today tickets for the ESC-final in OSLO was put out for sale.Tickets were sold out in 20 minutes!

Sale was followed on-screen, and the first sixty seconds 1000 tickets were sold. After 5 minutes over 3000 tickets sold.

10 000 of the finale tickets have already been distributed among the various delegations of participating countries and various fan clubs, while the remaining 8000 were available to the public. Monday morning it is still tickets left for the other events, but the final is sold out.

So if anybody had hopes of getting tickets to the final, too late now..... :S

This is probably Norway's worst entry since a long time. This sound like an oldfashioned Irish, neighties X-Mas song,...brrrrrrrrr And Norway had a golden girl in their nation... poor Venke....

Very anthemic, but I've heard the tune before, either an anthem or old song but a tad too familiar, good tho'

One other comment I forgot to add. This reminds me of 'I'll leave my heart' by Cindi who came close second to Scooch in the UK national final in 2007

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know it's early days but Norway could do it again with this. The only one so far to make me tingle with emotion. Scandinavia again very strong this year, of the songs announced so far top 3 are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, (not keen on Finland - should have sent Cider Hill). Getting so excited now about the contest

@ Sara Aurora Borealis

My comment was about the song and its performance, the music business in general, and to a certain extent about Eurovision - not about Norway! Of course Norwegians aren't any more superficial than anyone else! Lighten up! x

A bit old fashioned, but romantic and classy.
