She sang, she played, then...

A very first novel by Viktor Lazlo

Last week, the very first novel written by Viktor Lazlo (real name Sonia Dronier) was published in French-speaking territories, on Albin Michel editions.

The 1987 Eurovision hostess began her singing career back in 1985 with the release of a first album, She, out of which two songs reached success in France: Canoë Rose and pleurer des rivières (a French version of Cry me a river). Her second CD was recorded in English and released in many European countries two years after. It includes Breathless, the song she performed as the opening theme of the Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels.

Over the years, Viktor Lazlo - who will turn 50 next October - recorded several CD albums, without reaching any very big hit. Meanwhile, she began working as an actress, mainly for TV series, such as Navarro, a police drama which is very popular in France. Her novel, entitled La femme qui pleure (The woman who cries), presently receives good reviews and is presented as a "surprising and dark" history of a woman getting crazy for the man she loves.

"Writing is not a new occupation for me", Viktor Lazlo declares, in an interview made by Frédéric Seront, for Belgian paper La Dernière Heure. "I'm writing since I was 12. It's like a daily breathe. Some ten years ago, I wanted to know if my work was litterature or a simple private hobby. I got in touch with an editor and he told me I had some style. I was convinced to give it when asked by a journalist who wanted to write a biography on me. I refused but let him read my lines and he loved them".

One of the most classy and well spoken presenters ever... and her entrance singing breathless was..... absolutely breathless... great stuff....

Still don't understand her very arty farty earrings during the voting though... I thought at the time that they must have been antennes to receive the votes or did they symbolise the Atomium in Brussels ?

She was the best ESC hostess ever, a timeless epitome of style and elegance ... and when I listen to her music, which I do now and then, I can still feel the 80s. For me Canoë Rose is like one of those madeleines Proust made world famous ...

Dear ESC Today

I am writing to wish Viktor Lazlo all the best of luck with the novel, she was a superb hostess of the 32nd Eurovision Song Contest 1987, at the Palais du Centannere, in Brussels, Belgium. I will be interested if the novel will be released in the United Kingdom as I would be very interested in it.

Once again may I wish Viktor Lazlo all, the best of luck with the novel

Yours Truly

David James Toft

NB: If Belgium win the Eurovision Song Contest this year may I recommend Viktor Lazlo as she is a hostess par excellence.

Actually, Marko, the pair who hosted the final was fine. I aiming more at the two who hosted the semis. Lazlo made that evening/night even more special, though.

You mean Alsou who represented Russia in 2000 to learn from her!? Maybe she is not very good in host job of course coz she is proffesional singer and she doesn't need to learn that coz she will never do that gain, it was only for ESC but I think it was good to see Alsou (L) who gave one of the best places to Russia in ESC as host in Moscow! We also took Zeljko as host even if he never did that job (he wasn't very good in it), but he gave us AMAZING placement in ESC and I think it's OK! Imagine if Portugal will win ESC you will probably pick somebody from ESC who had good result, that's good for me!! ;)

Great hostess and great singer! Only Lil was better.

I still remember her elegance and charm. Last year's presenters could have learned on or two things from her, especially the pair that hosted the semis.

Don't have a clue who she is :S
But she looks so much like Hilary Swank in that photo :)

After presenting the ESC in 1987, she was invited by the Catalan TV, and she became very popular in Catalonia. She reached success not only with her song Breathless but also she participated in some Catalan films also sawn in the rest of Spain.

Love her. Such a beautiful charming woman. She was the highlight of the Brussels contest. She and the earrings she was wearing.
