Malta: "I never expected to win" says Thea Garrett

"I did not predict that this was going to go so far", these were the first words told by this year's Maltese representative Thea Garrett to esctoday.com' right after her victory in the Maltese national final.

The seventeen year old artist spoke about the fact that she was a newcomer and the first time she submitted a song it was selected for the Eurovision Song Contest. Her excitement was highly evident as we met her on stage after right after her winning performance. Esctoday.com followed Thea Garrett to her dressing room where she showed us her lucky charms.

The composer of the song My dream, Jason Cassar, explained how the collaboration with Thea Garrett started. Jason Cassar who penned the song with Sunny Aquilina is known for submitting songs with newcomer singers. In fact, it was him who wrote Chiara’s first entry for the Eurovision Song Contest The One That I Love that got a third place in 1998 while he worked with Kevin Borg who eventually won the Swedish Idol two years ago.

The overwhelming victory by Thea came with a consensus by the jury and public who selected My dream as the entry for Malta in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Thea Garrett will be the 23rd Maltese representative next May in Oslo.

I would only vote for this if I was drunk - or if they got rid of that awful bird. Very scary!

Ray did we watch the same show? cause i think this eurosong was the worst one and that stage looked horrible. It is true that the clips were very good and originall but last year there were far better songs than this year

whoever says that this is boring and old fashioned......first of all ballads are never out of fashion and secondly if this is boring...then you do not really know what boring means!
and for those who are saying that this year's maltasong had a low quality set of songs...i still think this year was far much better than last year. last year there were worse songs than this year!
and another thing...nobody said anything about the production....i think PBS did a very good show. it was very much like watching the eurovision. the stage was great, the lights were great, the cards and the voting system were superb and even the effects of production were amazing. good job! well done! MALTA seems ready to host ESC, whenever the Europeans give her the opportunity....who knows....we've been saying for many years that a good ballad can get the trophy for malta...could it be that in may thea can make OUR dream come true? hopefully! :)

i think thea is lovely and quite unique with the way she looks.
im not understanding why people are calling her old, i think she just her her own sense of style.
just because she is young doesnt mean she has to conform to the norm. i think she has class and grace.
did foxy look better just coz they were young and barely clothed.

look at johanna last year ...what a surprise... that ballad was certainly no better or worse than malta is sending this year and it was deemed as typical and boring and still managed to do well. as for johannas look she was dressed in a bad bridesmaids gown which did nothing for her.

the one thing both girls have is grace and beautiful voices.

i think jess is a good dancer however the bird is disturbing and needs to be removed.

best of luck thea you are wonderful

@ london boy

It only takes One Song to win Eurovision... Not all songs have even been chosen yet... a bit of optimism wouldn't hurt.

Also country's are starting to edit their songs... have u heard Albania!!! Wow they are AMAZING NOW!!!

The battle ain't over yet...

Oh god! once again Malta has chosen an old fashioned ballad that is the best cure for imsonia. Their musical taste is very weird! And please, ditch that sutpid bird!

Worst ever year for songs?

Another evening's national finals, another crop of frankly AWFUL songs. It boggles the mind to think that from 2006-2009 the quality of songs was increasingly good and now, we have to put up with the kind of tripe being selected all across Europe. Tripe like:

FYR Macedonia: Forgettable dirge which may well induce a coma

Armenia: They might soup the production up, but that won't get rid of the frankly awful and stupid lyrics.

Netherlands: Starts off sounding like some dodgy fairground ride. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it steams straight off the rails. Please tell me that is NOT an accordion I can hear.

Denmark: Regarded by many people as the 'highlight' of songs selected so far. Well, it's a sad statement on the quality of the songs when the highlight sounds like something dead dragged out of the late eighties and resuscitated without success.

Iceland: Formulaic and completely unexciting.

Malta: Paint me any old ballad by numbers. No, don't go to any special effort. Don't bother doing anything a) interesting b) memorable c) worth listening to.

And if all this weren't enough to scare you, be afraid, very afraid of what is going to be chosen in Estonia, Latvia, Bulgaria (mediocrity personified) and Ukraine.

At this rate, I won't be watching in May.

For those who are comparing Thea's song to last year's UK song ..well THANK YOU!!!! That means that it is a beautiful song !! THANK YOU!! That is an honour !!!

I take it as a compliment instead..but as I always say, watch out for Thea on the big night...she deserves the final...I'm sure that some changes will be made, the song will now be re-recorded and a video is in place...I'm sure she will make Malta proud! GO THEA!!

the bird behind her is a seagul. it is part of the lyrics of the song...the seagul that comes after storms...it is a metaphor..although there are some storms in life...one must hold on for their own dreams just like the seagul!!!
well done to the team!!

It's a good ballad ..... Nothing spectacular and It's going to end probably just like Lidia from Poland did last year ..... 11-13th place in the SF

She said that she does not want changes to be made

I think the song reaches a great climax but has quite a slow uninteresting intro. If you lose people in the intro, you lose their interest altogether. Hope this will be changed in time for the contest.

@ Ben
I have been watchinc ESC since 1973! What about you!
And I know how to listen to songs !Don't worry!
Where have you been when Hadise's song was blamed as a copy of Helena's song 'number one''

Fire Bird [19867]

@Ben Gray

Settle down...people have different tastes and yes to some people this song will remind them of the UK's entry from last year. Its just an opinion.

And if I were you I'd think twice about accusing others of not listening to songs because as I remember, the Macedonian songs were not released fully and yet you were already speaking negatively about everything. That is your opinion but then don't make posts like these criticizing what someone else thinks about the songs.

I find it quite sad that there are people on here who call themselves Eurovision fans and clearly don't even LISTEN to the songs in question, @omer demirkurt Are you really that narrow minded? The two songs sound absolutely NOTHING alike!

Some people really need to learn the difference between "copying," "plagarism," and "oh that reminds me of...!"
