Eirikur: "My mother raised me well"

Nordic Preview show - part 1

Many have been looking forward to the first of the four Nordic Preview shows. Would Eirikur award himself with maximum points? Would the new Norwegian expert be milder in his judgement of the songs than legendary Jostein Pedersen? Would the other Nordic experts like Eirikur’s song? We got the answer to all these and many other questions in the first of four shows.

This is the annual event where all the five Nordic countries get together shortly before the Eurovision Song Contest. Christer Björkman who represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992 hosts the shows which are produced by SVT in collaboration with NRK, DR, RUV and FST5. All the preview videos are presented for the viewers in four shows and the experts will comment on all songs and award each of them with points from 1 to 5.

Click here to read the full summary of the whole show, including all comments and points.

When Eirikur Hauksson won the Icelandic final it was assumed that it meant a change for Iceland in this Nordic panel, but Iceland decided to stick with Eirikur to judge all the songs for the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

There are two changes to the list of experts this year. Per Sundnes is representing Norway after NRK fired their legendary Jostein Pedersen who was famous for his comments and the fact that he was quite often the one disliking a song the most. In many ways he was rightfully compared with BBC’s Terry Wogan. But is Per any better? About one of the songs he directly said:  This is the worst of the worst! It is so horrible, she can probably sing, but it only turns into a copy. 0 points.

The second change is Denmark where it is Adam Duvå Hall, host of the Danish final 2006 and 2007 judging the songs. From Sweden it is once again Charlotte Perrelli, also known as Charlotte Nilsson who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1999 with Take me to your heaven, and Thomas Lundin will as usual represent Finland. Charlotte compared one of the singers from this years Eurovision Song Contest with a budgerigar sitting there in its bird cage jumping up and down!

The first part included the first 10 countries for the semi-final starting with Bulgaria ending with The Netherlands. It was of course very interesting to see how Eirikur judge his competitors and those who thinks he might be positive about all the songs and award them with high points will be quite surprised as Eirikur was being honest about what he thinks of the songs. About one of them he even said: I give it one point though to show that my mother raised me well so I wont give any of my competitors zero points. The same song was however awarded with maximum 5 points from Thomas Lundin, Finland so these experts doesn't quite agree.

One of the songs was quite clearly the favourite with 24 out of maximum 25 points while another song was clearly the least liked with only points in total!

Esctoday.com will be back in a week with a full report from the second preview show.

renee lind, I also like the icelandic song this year. But I have to agree with you - it would have been better in icelandic! I still think (and hope) it will do well in the semifinal and jump to the final, though. It is a good song. ;)

Well it's a scandal that everyone but Christian gave Iceland 5 points. It was imberrasing. He is not worth all these points. It was so obvious that it was just because he sat in the same room and when one of them started with 5 points then everybody had to do the same.
And by the way Chrlotte sucks in this program..

I love Ísland and its people.
Just to come up with Svartfjallaland for Montenegro. That's so poetic, and oh so Icelandic.

Hoffa

Thanks for the accurate translation of what Sigga said. I guessed from her expression that it was something like that. Well, Valentine Lost is in the key of G flat major, which doesn't exactly inspire you to shout 'hurrah' from the rooftops. Other songs in that key are 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' and er 'Yellow Submarine'. Perhaps she should try Boom Bang A Bang or Dancing Lasha Tumbai instead!

Check out my blog at http:/www.blog.central.is/hofomofo

I´ve reviewed and given points to the first 10 songs this year, and got more coming up in the weeks to come.

It´s in Icelandic but everyone is welcome!

Love from Iceland.

Where did they drag the Norwegian man from - the muppet show ?

They should really have shown all the songs in their entirity because they were making comments about the start of some songs and the viewers didn't get to see them. Well it wasn't a surprise that Iceland got so many points - the scandinavians normally give themselves high marks in the preview programme, but it's not exclusively these programmes - look at the recent fan club gathering in Portugal thinking they have a serious chance of getting through. Um they haven't got a hope in hell.

I know I'm going to get some comments back but shit ! that woman cant sing or perform and the song sounds like she's sinking through the floor. Portugal has such beautiful music otherwise, why do they bring out the worst possible tosh for Eurovision?

Before anyone criticises me for the Ark (as I'm living in Sweden) - I'm voting for Andorra !

Ian S, Florain G, eurofriend, Sandra Åhlander, hersing Dragon.... Has it not occured to you that the panel actually like Valentine lost???
And how pathetic is to assume the high score is given to be nice? Come on- they are adult people.

Wig Wam was totally slaughtered by Carlotte in 2005. The same was Carola last year by Jostein, Lordi was the same by Thomas. Nobody liked Las Vegas the swedish entry of 2005, except Charlotte. And Christine Gulbrandsen did not get high score from neither in the panel last year.

I really love Valentine lost and hope it will make its way to the final!

Molly ...
It seems Hoffa has already answered you ... and very correctly. I actually agreed a lot with what she said. Charlotte is a ... well, I don't like her anymore than any of the others. Together those five people (along with the announcer) make up such a fun and nice team, and I definitely don't always agree with them... but I have so much fun watching them.

Best wishes from Iceland,
Doddi

I only wish Eirikur would keep the Icelandic lyrics, the song has totally lost it's magic after being translated. It doesn't even tell the same story anymore, not even remotely. But he does have a wonderful voice, a great stage presence and even the English version is well above average. I just hope it's enough to get through to Saturday...

@Molly Parton
I´ll tell you what Sigga said.
She thinks the song is OK (she´s obviously not thrilled about it), the lyrics (as she puts it) "nothing to shout hurrah about", and she´s not sure it will get us through the semi-final "in which we´ve been way too long". On the other hand, she thinks that Eiríkur is a fantastic singer and totally holds the song together. She concludes with "Eiríkur, it´s up to YOU to get us through the semi-final! Go Iceland!"

@Adam Slack: I think you are misjudging the reactions The Ark will meet at home if they "fail" in ESC. It is true that ESC and Melodifestivalen are taken seriously in Sweden :) but on the other hand The Ark are not building their career on this single event. They have a lot of old fans, and new fans that saw them in Melodifestivalen and then started to love their music in general. They have made many good songs before and the new album release looks like their biggest success ever. So, they have PLENTY of fans than will not care about the ESC result!

I think the Nordic preview show is very entertaining, but you should not take it that seriously. They are just 5 persons giving their own biased opinions. On the other hand, they often make quite good predictions. Last year they misjudged the entries from Lithuania and Belgium, but who didn't ... Otherwise they did pretty well!
After having seen many entries in their live versions, I must say that Iceland has a good change this year! The video is boring and so are the English lyrics. But Eirikur on stage, singing in Icelandic, is great! Unfortunately it looks like he will sing in English after all. Too bad, as Icelandic is such a beautiful language.

They gave the right amount of points to Eirikur.. His song is for sure one of the best songs this year. I hope the contest will be held in Reykjavík next year! That would be awesome.

The programme is very enjoyable. Personally I did not like the guy from Denmark though.. the other ones were quite OK; My favourite is Thomas Lundin.

Doddi / Andri

Yes this show was a lot of fun. Can either of you tell me what Sigga said about Eirikur's song, because I can't understand her, or the Dane. Everyone seems to find Montenegro song difficult. Charlotte is great, isn't she?

Personally I like the entries from Bulgaria, Switzerland and Belarus better than Iceland in this first episode, but I'm very proud of my country - and although I didn't at first predict Iceland qualifying ... I might change that opinion. 10th of may will be so much fun, and 12th of May as well ... more fun of course if Eirikur will be singing both nights ...

I like so many of the songs this year.

I love the Nordic TV show, and I have a hard time understanding why some people here are against it. I wouldn't have either given Eirikur so many points and believe me ... he can take criticism from his peers. I had a hard time believing those high points he received but why shouldn't we believe that at least four persons really liked the song???

have fun with shows like these... come on :-)

I agree with many here. I think the other "experts" were too kind to Eirikur. I mean, 24/25!!! And I agree with you Molly Parton; Eiríkur is a big boy and he can handle honesty. I think this song, Valentine lost, will not make it to the final. But that's just me. We'll see :)

Molly Parton [29330]
Sun 15 Apr 2007 00:12:10

Well the Icelandic entry is strong and I guess as a 47 year old heavy metal artiste of some experience they didn't have to give him 5 points just to make him feel good. He is a big boy and I am sure he would not have cared if they gave him zero because he is obviously a true gentleman.

Fun to watch, as expected :)

But they were too kind to Eirikur.
His song is not THAT good, and I don't think he will make it to the final.

@ Ross Ben-Baharin, yes, most Finns (at least esc fans) don't like that current format of the preview shows, either, from what I've heard... ;) But some say it's meant to be a "lighter" show for 'ordinary people', aka non-esc fans to take in, don't know about that though.. (And of course they gave 10 points to Finland's entry, what did you expect, it was Finnish TV's preview after all.. ;))

I was finally able to watch the Nordic previews - good thing they had the gist of comments in English here, otherwise I'd hardly have understood much, especially spoken Danish is impossible to understand for me... ;) And didn't agree with most of their comments, apart from Iceland's entry, but that's part of the fun ;)
