No withdraw despite financial problems
Denmark stays in the Contest
DR’s financial problems are such that the broadcaster needed to cut down on many of its expensive programs, and when it was announced that this would affect the entertainment department many feared that a Danish withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest was on the way. However DR has now made it clear that this will not happen.
The financial situation at DR - which has now left big parts of the sports and entertainment departments suffering - stems from the construction of new buildings. The budget for the building program kept getting more and more expensive, and no one acted before it had become more-or-less a matter of survival for DR, the Danish public broadcaster.
DR will be selling out its rights for major sports events, and planned prime time entertainment programs have been cancelled. Music events like the Danish Music Awards and some jazz programs will be affected as well – but Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and the Eurovision Song Contest stays. The Nordic junior contest will not be affected either.
DR will have to save 187.5 million DKR (26 million euros) every year on the budget, and unfortunately it has also been needed to fire 300 people.
We can now hope that the only drama regarding Denmark and the Eurovision Song Contest will be concentrated on DQ's Drama queen in Helsinki. Due to the rest of Europe not twisting like Denmark did last year he will have to start in the semi-final on 10th of May.

@Nikolas
Thanx and this time your writing is more "grown up" so to speak :-). Well done..
It's okay you not liking Drama queen...it was not my favourite in the danish final but my second or third. My favourite was Aud Wilken in the semis but unfortunately she didn't go through so in the final i favourised Stig Rossen and he's wonderfull and strong ballad. If we'd chosen that song we would have been a sure qualifier to the final 12 may. I guarantee...
I have absolutely no idea which songs qualify to the final 10 may and i see the semi totally "open" so to speak. I like Malta very much too, but i fear it's a bit old-fashioned....
I wish you a pleasant evening on both 10 and 12 may.
greetings :-)
@Fra Mols Til Skagen:
i partly agree with you...especially on the point that we should vote for the songs we like most and not for our favourite countries....i am doing this often and even more this year....i am supporting Maltas Vertigo, just because i think it is a great song, although until i heard vertigo i had no particular bond or liking for this country(mow i do, thanx to music and the ESC...i really do not like the enrty of Denmark this year, for me it is not at all a good drag act or a good song, but still good luck to it!
I will also say that Denmark have for the last 7-8 years given more points to Greece than Greece has given to DK!
In 1963 when Nana Mouskouri where singen for Luxenbourg Denmark gave 2 point to it and the countries could only vote for 5 songs!
With so many countries entering you can not vote for them all, so ofcourse neighbours often vote for eachothers, and I think it is because they have the same taste in music!
But bac to the subject, I really hope that Denmark will stay in Eurovision for many years, it will be such a shame if we don´t!
@Nikolas.
I agree that we don't give Greece many points and especially 2001 could have been a bit higher. I was seated in parken and i remember all 37,000 singing along "die for you" and therefore i expected at least 8 points from us that year.
But at least we have voted for Greece in both 2001, 2004 and 2005...I can understand why we didn't in 2002...horrible.
In BOTH 2001 and 2002 we gave 12 points to Malta and 10 to Malta in 2005. Turkey got 10 in 2004 and 8 in 2005. Bosnia 8 points in 2004 and 2006...so i don't see that we give nearly all our top-marks to neighbours.
But i admit we give points to neighbours...but what about Greece???....
Neighbour voting will always be around...also in the future and ...there's only one thing to do about it, and that is to vote for the SONG you really like and NOT THE COUNTRY.
Personally i voted for Slovenia in semi 2005 and Ukraine in both semi and final 2006.
This year??...I don't know yet...will wait and see untill i've heard all the songs live...but Serbia, Cyprus and Iceland are on top of my list so far..
Good luck to everyone...incl. Cyprus and Greece :-)
@at the danish friends of this site:
i' m sorry guys..i left this comment before, not because i ahve anything against your country as such in the "normal life", i am just fed up, that you never give Greece more than 2 points, even when it has a very very good entry and you give almost always your 6-12 points to all the nordic and neighbouring countries.....that's all, plus that i really find the danish entry of this year a very bad drug act(i have seen 100 times better ones) and the song very meaningless and with a very banal melody.....
Andreas Baxter,
Could not be more agree!
Dear Nikolas V & Jonny Stovner ,
You are such a loving and positive person! You realy most sad...
good luck denmark from Malta
so glad to see Denmark one of my fav countries in Eurovision, DQ have to qualify!!
Go Denmark!
It was an awsome show 2001 in Parken!
Hope you gets to the final this year!
Thanx Nikolas....!!.
me on the other hand could perfectly imagine the contest without Denmark, especially without this awfull bad drug act(i like drug acts very much, but when they are good!) and this meaningless, ordinary song...Please bring back ITALY, bring back LUXEMBOURG, MARROCO(only once in the contest in 1980?), let LEBANON take part and other nice countries....i could perfectly do without Denmark in the contest
This goes to show how crappy DR really are. They spend a fortune on a building but don't give a s**t about their programmes. Everything is money-driven. Like in 2001 when 38 000 people had to pay a fortune to see and hear nothing at Parken. Besides, Denmark is a crappy country. Their "integration policy" is racist.
The reason DR would pull ESC, is only because of that stupid buildig construction ( a nice building though). If DR goes down, then there's 15 other stations or soemthing in Denmark that easily could promote ESC in the future.
Drama Queen is so nice!
12 points from Romania!

@ Erkki kuronen
Danish Tv-2 won't have anything to do with ESC. I remember having read about it shortly after the Olsen-victory in 2000...but nowadays...who knows!.
The danish final this year was superb and imo the best since 1989. I hope DR will pick great songs next year as well.
Love love Love DQ
, all the best Denmark the contest would be less without you
I WOULD miss Denmark this year too and I really hope that "Drama Queen" will qualify for the finals so that we will have the opportunity of watching it 2 times, both on 10th & 12th May;-)
Denmark HAS TO be in the contest! Even if their entry this year isn´t one of the highlights...atleast not musically speaking!
I wouldn't have minded them withdrawing THIS year. Let them return next year with something decent.
Would have been horrible if Denmark withdraw!
Who spread all that rubbish guys? Of course we are gonna stay!
THANK GOD one of my favourite ESC countires stays in the contest. No ESC without Denmark. Can't remember a danish entry that I really disliked. Always like the danish entries a lot!!!
WOW! I wouldn't expect that from Denmark... lol
Greetings from rich MACEDONIA!
Good decision, Denmark! I can hardly imagine ESC without you;-)
I hope we stay in the contest!
this is ridiculous.....if Montnegro, or even FYROM finds money for the Eurovision and for some promotion of their entry, then Denmark can surely find some too....personally i do not cre if they go on on the contest, their entries are usually not that good, and they never give high points to any mediterranean or a balkan country...almost never....and i do not like the entry of this year, it is just a very cheap drug art and a very cheap, worn out and meaningless song....if they wanted they could withdraw, no problem for me :-)
Isn't Danish TV2 also a member of the Eurovision network? I mean that should DR have withdrawn, maybe some other actor could've stepped in?
