Sorry guys but the scoreboard in 1992 said YUGOSLAVIA. Not Serbia plus any other bits and pieces. I think it's great that she is still going and the album sounds superb.

I think there was some comment about Helga and Oliver not exactly being teenagers and then they quit only to come back for the live show. I remember Helga coming back as the Croatian spokesperson giving the votes in 1994(?). The year she called Gerry the host Gary.

Hehe. They were well loved across Yugoslavia as TV presenters, Oliver in particular was always meticulous - possibly the best of the lot. Helga on the other hand had read out the YU votes at least more than once, on which embarrassing occasion she didn't have the votes in time, causing a sigh of dissaproval in the hall and a slight delay - can't remember what year that was though. :P

Darko - my recollection is that Helga and Oliver were the original choice but then mid weekish JRT brought the younger pair in during rehersals at the same time (I remember seeing a very blurred photo of them at the time - one was the actor Rene Medvešek).

I thought 1990 was a really good year as I mentioned because the hosts put on a solid good show without any gimmics and didn't try and outdo the previous year's show. The stage was simple yet effective.

Pissa:
if I remember correctly, she sang with a band called Extra. And there somehow she got nicknamed Extra Nena.

@ Jason: I don't think the younger presenters in Zagreb (Dubravka & Rene) were sacked as such, weren't they there as a stand-by presenting couple, in case something happens to either of the main presenters? I remember vaguely that the stand-by couple was at least a routine on ESC broadcasts if not a requirement. Perhaps it's still the case.

I think they were simply dismissed when it became apparent that Helga & Oliver will be alive and well and in one piece on the night. :)

I wasn't that keen on the national final version it was more techno than the CD version but it didn't do it for me some how.

Yugoslavia were the Estonia of the 80s - often top 5 but never quite won until 1989 and then not with their best song.

I remember how great the Yugoslav song sounded in the previews in 1991, it sounded like a real contender and then that performance, surely one of the worst ever. It is still a great song on CD though.

The best "Brazil" ever sounded was at the national preselection, it had a funky, sharp electro-house arrangement to it, totally belonging to the sound of the times. Alas, in Rome this had to be discarded and rearranged for the obligato live orchestra (which itself was a mess throughout the evening) - and a lot of the original freshness and oomph of the song was lost. :)

I was surprised too to see Baby Doll has so many fans. I still remember: I'd recorded all the preview videos during the week and had Yugoslavia as my top favourites. In the Yugoslav video one of the dancers had a bottle of beer in his pants and then the beer came out, suggesting an ejaculation.

But then came the big night. I saw Baby Doll's performance and i thought Yiks!!!! Thus, in the end the only surprise was that she managed to get one point from Malta and to avoid the last place.

Can anybody enlighten a 15-year-old doubt of mine? Why on earth is her stage name Extra Nena? Why Extra?

Yugoslavia was always one of the best Eurovision countries but they always seemed to come 4th or 5th until 1989. It was a shock that they won then but they staged an excellent contest the following year in Zagreb.

They stopped trying to out do the last year's contest and just put on a good solid presentation. Who can forget Helga and Oliver (and the two other younger presenters they brought in during the week and then sacked).

I have a soft spot for Serbia and think they will put on an excellent contest next year.

The 1991 sensation always spell her name Bebi Dol, right? Rome was just an exception to look more international, not that it helped much.
The Yugoslavia of 1992 was just in between - the EBU decided Yugoslavia should take part like nothing had happened, but by May 9th, only Serbia and Montenegro remained in the federation...

(her 1992 entry was good)

Surely you can't be serious......

And could everyone please decide whether it's Bebi Dol (as it actually is) or Baby Doll (as it would be in translation).

Come to think of her, she'd be great to wander about the Green Room - one woman who speaks flawless, impeccable English, who is charming, eloquent, relaxed & funny and can still put everyone else to shame appearance-wise.

is Extra Nena a man or a woman?

'The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) was formed on 28 April 1992, and it consisted of the former Socialist Republic of Serbia and Socialist Republic of Montenegro. The new constitution of Yugoslavia was voted by the rest of MPs, elected on federal one-party elections in 1986.'

eurovision 1992 was on 9th may 1992

actually the federal republic of yugoslavia started in april 1992 and ended in may/june 2006 (while being renamed in 2003) this makes dragan wrong

Such a pointless interview... there wasn't even one decicive statement that would really matter...

""Which songs did you like from early on?"" could be taken to mean from the early stages of the contest that year rather than earlier Eurovisions.

What a shallow interview. Totally meaningless. How does this woman come up with her "enlighting" answers ?

(her 1992 entry was good)

@ w s & s m
There is no mistake in the text. In 1992 Yugoslavija consisted of 4 ex YU republics (all except Slo and Cro). Remember, in Jugovizija ’92 participated Zerina Cokoja and other authors from BiH and Macedonia. So Extra Nena can’t be the first SCG entry. In 1992 Yugoslavia was somewhere in between old SFRJ and new SRJ which later become SCG.

The question was: "Which songs did you like from early on?" And she answered: "Azucar Moreno".

Jason Williams [15592]

She mentions she liked Azúcar Moreno but they were from 1990 not 1992.

this text is full of mistakes!

extra nena represented the FEDERATION of SERBIA and MONTENEGRO under the name FR YUGOSLAVIA. so in fact THAT state participated in 1992 for the first tame and later in 2004 and 2005 for second and theird time (the country just changed its "title" yet it was the same from 1992-2006...the country borders were same!

Great interview....seems like she won`t return to the Eurovison though, pity.

w s [29210]

Actually Extra Nena represented the area Serbia-Montenegro under the name of Yugoslavia. The last representant of the whole of Yugoslavia was the extroardinary Bebi Doll.
