The MyMagic interview

MyMagic enter this year’s Lithuanian preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest with Lady, a song written by Greek Gorgi aka Georgios Kalpakides and penned by German Stefan Engel. Lasy is a tender ballad with a twist! All the lyrics of the song come from past Eurovision hits most Eurofans will recognise. MyMagic, Gorgi and Stefan spoke to us about themselves and their song which competes tomorrow in the third and last Lithuanian heat.

Have you been following the contest? The Eurovision Song Contest is not really very popular in Lithuania, do you feel your participation will help you career?

Every year we follow the contest. This year will be the third time we are trying to reach the Eurovision Song Contest actually. It is quite popular in Lithuania, but it’s becoming a good place for new bands or performers to show their songs and get more attention. Our participation is helping our career as well but this year this is not our primary conceen. Out biggest priority is to make everybody feel good listening to us. We will be very happy when people hear the name of  “MyMagic” and say that they felt nice listening to us.

How did you decide to enter the Lithuanian preselection? What would it mean to you to represent Lithuania in Belgrade?

We had a lot of thoughts about our participation. And the song Lady helped us make our minds up. It allowed us too say yes. This song suits us very well. It suits our style. We had decided: “If we have a good song we will go to the Lithuanian preselection, if not – we will try to go next year”. And then Gorgi wrote to us and said that he wants to submit the song for Eurovision. It was great news. And when we heard that song for the first time, both of us said “Yes! Super! we want it!”

About representing our country in Belgrade….at first it would be a great honour to sing for Lithuania. We would be very proud. “MyMagic” is not afraid to do this. We would be ready to outdo ourselves. We have a lot of ideas about the show on stage, and we think that Europe could like it.

What can we expect from MyMagic on Saturday, have you prepared a special show for the presentation of Lady?

We are still preparing, the time is going by so fast. Sometimes it feels that the luck is going to another direction than “MyMagic”. We hope to present Gluk on stage today. It is innovative technology which is quite new in the USA, Germany, Italy, Greece and other countries. The projector is translating the view (stars, flowers and many more things) the camera is detecting movements and makes the view change reacting to music, movement or touch. It is very impressive but we are worried that due to the technical problems we could not show it live on TV studio.

We have asked the composer and the lyricist of Lady to talk to us about the song from their respective viewpoints. How about you, the performers, how does the song make you feel?

The song Lady is very good for its structure. It’s lyrical and it’s easy to remember. We think that this song is exactly what people need  - to feel nice and relaxed. Good song, good and strong vocal, nice show on a stage – these are the things we are working on.  What Lady makes us feel….it feels that the action is happening in a real time.

Do you have a message for the Lithuanian readers of our site?
We don’t want to say like LT UNITED  said  “vote vote vote”. We just want to ask people to join and watch the semi final, and vote for the song which makes them feel right. We are the band who cares about quality very much.

And one for the international fans who will be watching you (via webcast) on Saturday?

Let “MyMagic” be Your magic.

Stefan Engel- the lyricist

Rumour has it that there is something in your song, Lady, that will strike a chord with most Eurovision fans, can you tell us more about it?

The lyrics of our song LADY are mainly based on titles of Eurovision songs, which I combined in a new way. You will find song titles from various countries and they fit
together perfectly to create a new song!

How did the idea come about?

The idea came up during the 2006 contest in Athens when I met Gorgi. He really liked the idea and vision behind these lyrics and he found a lovely melody- a strong ballad, full
of emotions.

Tell us a bit more about you and your work so far and about your cooperation with MyMagic.

First of all we produced a demo version of Lady in Germany. Gorgi was looking for artists, who might be interested in singing our song. As he had already contacts in Lithuania from former finals he got in contact with Vilius from MyMagic and that’s how it all started....

About myself there is not so much to tell-I have loved Eurovision since my childhood. First time I tried to place a song for a national selection was for Ireland in 2007 and made it luckily to the shortlist. Last autumn our team won the Home Composed Song Contest HCSC 2007 for Germany, so we will be hosts this year. And there is still another song on its way to the Irish Eurovision selection 2008, a cooperation of a Serbian/ German composers’ team and my lyrics.

Gorgi- The composer

Although you are Greek you can easily be called a veteran in Lithuania, how has that helped you improve?

Well, this is my 3rd entry in the Lithuanian Preselections after reaching the top 10 in both 2004 and 2005. I could say that my previous experience has helped me a lot to the way I cope with the contest nowadays.

What is different this year with Lady and MyMagic?

This year, I had the time to get well prepared for it and along with Stefan, the lyricist,I was lucky to have found MyMagic to perform our song. The group put their heart and soul to it and you will know what I mean, after you watch the performance on the 26th of January."

Tell us a bit about your song from the composer’s point of view.

It is basicly a fairytale-like ballad, which becomes quite epical at some point and makes the perfect soundtrack to the clever lyrics. I hope that the people and the jury enjoy it as much as we do and give us the green light for the Final.
